Should I get Sewer/Water backup coverage on my Home Insurance?
Hi folks. I’m in contract on a house in Ridgewood, and am currently shopping around for home insurance. With the rain storms, I have been thinking about sewer/water backup coverage. Even though my house is towards the top of a hill, I think it would be a good idea. Some places are throwing out $25k of coverage, others $10k of coverage. Wondering, how much coverage should I get, or should I not get it at all? Also, what do people think about service line coverage? Good idea or no?

My own approach was to check during the inspection before buying to see if they old lead line had already been replaced, ask for a discount if not, and be sure to have $10,000 or $40,000 on hand in case of emergency such as the sewer line failing, heating system failing, etc.

Got it, thanks. So most insurance companies offer a coverage for sewage backing up into the basement and destroying property, but I don’t think they provide coverage for the service line from the street to the house needing repair. I’m going to get the sewer backup coverage, but is there any way to get legit protection on the condition of the service line? AWR seems like a waste of money.

In my experience, AWR is a scam at an inoffensive price designed to maximize profits while disincentivizing litigation. They cancelled us immediately despite our sewer line being “covered”, leaving me with a $20,000 fix. One of their primary salespeople is in federal prison now after a racketeering scheme.
A proper flood policy from an insurance company is a much better bet, especially if you are prone to flooding.

ok. listen i have awr here only because there appears there is no other choice. read about them on here. there are some serious commentators on here who have had issues with them. something was posted only a month or so ago. search “class action” in the search line.

So it looks like the insurance companies offer coverage for sewer backing up into the house, but not service line coverage. I have heard of AWR for service line coverage.

someone else said that they offer that on their home insurance and it might be nice if we can all learn more details. before you consider awr, read what other people say on here. at least your insurance company is regulated by the state. it does not sound like awr is (correct me if i am wrong please).
