Sewer vent?

Hello, trying to figure out if my 3 story building needs a sewer vent? Or if I may already have one? For sure we don’t have one in the front of the building where I see all of my neighbors vents (the flat, round, punctured plate, near the sidewalk level or the curved pipe coming up from the ground). We do have this pipe coming out of the roof, which is in proximity to the drain pipe that runs inside of the wall of the building to the basement… so maybe this is it? Is there any connection between sewer back up in heavy rain or surge (Ida and Sandy, because of CSO) and the lack of a vent? Thank you! It’s called an FAI or fresh air inlet. It has two principle functions. It lets air in to balance pressure in the drainage system and replace the air that’s naturally rising and being expelled through the rooftop plumbing vent terminals, and it provides fresh to prevent air lock in the house trap. Something like a vacuum breaker. A secondary and unintended function may be that in a high flow condition, such as a pump being discharged into the drain, a rush of water may force air out of the pipe. Aside from that, its only function is to let air in to the building drain.

The house trap fresh air vent that you are missing allows air to escape once your drainage hits the house trap. Hence the gurgling noise because air has to pass out of the system through the trap. Its pretty common in my neighborhood (Carroll Gardens) that the vent broke off in the front yard and was cemented over at some point. you can get a plumber to run a new vent, but that could entail digging up the front yard. In she neighborhoods, the vent is concealed with a grate in the stoop or front wall

The one on the first floor you are describing is the “fresh air intake vent.” Not all the houses were built with one. Long story short, if you aren’t having issues with bad smells or water draining slowly in your fixtures, you may not need one. If you are having an issue consult a plumber, preferably one who specializes in drains. It has nothing to do with backup and overflows during storms, so don’t worry about that.

so if you can’t find any vents after a more thorough review, i suggest having a plumber in for inspection. if you are an attached brownstone, there should be at a minimum one on roof and one in front (or under stoop). maybe they have been moved to less conspicuous locations?

fyi these are heavy cast iron pipes, at least 3.5” inside diameter. pics shown are either for chimney or boiler.

can’t say for sure what is causing your water issues but even people with proper venting received plenty of water in their basements. if none of your neighbors got flooded, then perhaps it could be a venting issue. it just sounds strange you would have no vents – they were there originally so if they were covered over you would want to know that especially if it terminates inside the house.

There is typically also a vent on the first floor level. Pretty much what OP described… the ‘flat round punctured plate…’ that you can see from the outside . Its in addition to the vent for the stack(s).

What do you mean there should be a vent on the side where the sewer enters the building? I have the main stack through the roof, but should I have another vent for the sewer?

You should have a sewer vent on your roof for each plumbing stack and an additional one coming off where the main sewer line enters the property venting out the side of the building at the 1st Fl. If they are missing, sealed, or clogged, your drains likely won’t drain / vent properly and you’ll have slow or gurgling drains and possibly problems with sewer gas smells. The thick cast iron pipe on your roof is probably the sewer vent for your plumbing stack.
