sewer trap in basement

Hi everyone,
We have an old house with a sewer trap in the basement. The kind where you lift up the cover and the pipes are underneath. Is there anyway you can move a trap outdoors? Has anyone had experience with this. Hate having it in the basement with sewer gasses etc in the air.

I think there’s some confusion over nomenclature. An access door to pipes underground is not a trap. A trap is a u-bend in a pipe that holds water so no sewer gases can escape into the house. It’s not feasible to locate an access door to pipes outside because the pipes would freeze and break. As for the location of the house trap, the bend in the main sewer line, it should be inside the cellar just before the sewer line exits the house (at least that is true in houses like ours where the plumbing is in the cellar but above ground). (FWIW, we had a drain outside with no trap that connected to our main sewer line in the cellar after the house trap, we had horrible strange smells wafting up from that drain all through the house, we removed that drain (it was not needed in that spot) and put in a proper vent (air intake) line to the outdoors and now no more strange smells!) If you are having smells coming up from your cellar, have a licensed plumber check the main house trap is in the correct location and functioning, there are no drains without functioning traps in the area , you have a proper vent line in the correct place, and no water leaks from pipes in the area. Even if the plumbing is A-OK, it’s possible condensation near the earth or water leaks from other sources could be causing mold and peculiar mushroom/potato/waste smells. Let us know what you find! Also, the location of the house trap needs to be coordinated with the lowest point in your waste piping (it all works by gravity) – unless you want to deal with pumping sewage up to a higher level (you don’t). While I don’t know whether your house trap could be outside by code, when you walk through the practical hurdles to provide a new accessible location I think you get to the same answer.

To reiterate and expand on what others are saying, your waste piping system is designed so that sewer gases (and smells) are separated from you by water (the u-shaped traps at the bottom of your toilet, under your sink, etc). Air is vented from the system fully to the outside (at the roof, or at the front of the house) – this keeps the water in the traps from being sucked into the waste system and exposing you to sewer gases. It’s worth noting that, especially in old houses, the house trap needs to be accessible – this is where paper towels and non-flushable wipes often become lodged and cause sewer backups. The caps on the house trap (‘clean-outs’) exist so that they can be removed and the trap can be cleaned out.

Good question – I don’t have the answer, but also wondered as in my house the trap is just inside the basement next to the door that leads under the stoop, and it seemed like relocating about 3 feet to a position under the stoop might be worthwhile. Outside of NYC many houses have their trap outside the house. Wasn’t clear if that’s allowed in the city or not.

There aren’t any gases from a sewer trap that can cause harm. The plumber may have an ulterior motive for telling you that.

Also, if the trap has water in it and is not leaking through a hairline crack, the sewer gases should not waft out, right? If you’re having unusual smells, particularly mushroom like odors, be aware that even small (harmless) amounts of mold can sometimes be a culprit.

I don’t know anyone who has successfully put the trap outside in nyc. We all have this but here is how I manage mine:

1) cap both sides of the trap pipes with something relatively airtight like this: https://www.homedepot.com/p/4-in-Plastic-DWV-Flexible-Cap-PQC-104/100372305

2) in the trap pit a snug fitting carved piece of 1″ thick XPS attached to / backed with a larger 3/4″ piece of plywood larger than the trap hole. i.e. Trap the vapors in the pit https://www.homedepot.com/p/Project-Panels-FOAMULAR-1-in-x-2-ft-x-2-ft-R-5-Small-Projects-Rigid-Pink-Foam-Board-Insulation-Sheathing-PP1/203553730
