Sewer line insurance

We received (again) a letter recommending sewer line insurance. I went through past threads about it on Brownstoner and it seems to be a divided issue. I also found this: http://www.sheepsheadbites.com/2013/03/water-sewer-line-insurance-awr-dep/
Is anybody out there happy that they got the insurance? The DEP is recommending American Water Resources for this service.

Um, thanks arkady. I am professionally obligated to say that nothing I say on this site is legal advice. That said, I did call them up the first time I received the brochure because I wanted to find out what kinds of occurrences were and were not covered. In my case, we had replaced the old water and sewer lines as part of our reno back in 2006, so I am not worried about the risk of natural aging resulting in leaks. So I wanted to know about whether damage due to thinks like tree roots was within the scope of coverage or excluded. They would not give me an answer. I am suspicious of insurance generally, as I think part of the business model is to find reasons to disclaim, and the exclusions here are pretty amorphous. I did not want to pay for coverage only to have them disclaim for some BS reason. But I have the benefit of relatively new water and sewer lines.

Are sewer lines that are connected to storm drains covered under the program?

A. The Sewer Service Line Protection Program covers repairs to sewer lines that are connected to storm drains. However, repairs to the rain water pipes, including storm drains, risers, leaders, gutters and catch basins, are not covered.

Wow. I was just about to sign up. Thanks for this info, Eman. Did the insurance co just figure this out? Why don’t they cover that — are the combined drains more likely to fail? And how on earth can DEP recommend the insurance if no one with a 19th century house is covered?

If you search back in the forums (which is really hard since the new redesign) you will find that when this insurance was first intoduced, they actually paid claims…more recently all claims have been rejected due to the enormity of the excluded preexistant conditions in the insurance contract, the most egregious being that they do not cover combined sewer and storm drainage lines. Every brownstone in Brooklyn has combined storm and sewer drains making this coverage useless

My plumber said the only company to use is American Water – the DEP recommended one. I, too, was skeptical but I trust my plumber and signed up. In the scheme of things, its pretty cheap insurance.

To replace the main sewer line it can cost thousands of dollars. my next door neighbor had to pay $17,000 to have his repaired because he didn’t have the insurance. I think it’s worth the extra $20 every 3 months.

There have been several previous threads on this. Afair, some bad experiences (non-coverage due to the extensive exceptions,) and a few positives. I figure that, since I don’t know anyone who’s had a serious outage, and it’s hard to generalize from the few who’ve had $5000+ bills, I’ll just mentally figure I’ve saved about 1/2 that amount by not paying the premiums for 16 years 😉 Touch wood.
