Sewer line complications
Hi all, lucky to be living back in the family home that I grew up in – generations 3, 4 and now 5 represented in three different apartments, with a great store tenant. We recently started having some issues with toilet back up in the store. AWR came and found that we don’t have a sewer trap so we had to take care of that work on our own before they would investigate a possible break in the pipe going to the sewer. After good investigative work by the sewer plumbers (recommended by our second generation plumber), we have learned that we don’t even have a sewer line out to the street, let alone a trap. Our sewer line does not go out to the street directly but goes by way of our neighbor’s. Our sewer lines are connected, which is not too surprising given they were part of the same property when our building was purchased by our family back in the 50’s. It appears that our sewer line needs to be disconnected from our neighbor’s and then have our own sewer line installed out to the street. Has anyone else had this type of sewer issue? Or have any advice for us in proc eeding? We are investigating our options with our own insurance for some possible reimbursement but it is an expensive problem and we want to make sure we are doing it right. Any insights welcome – thank you!

It sounds like some of the excavation work on our property might be covered, but otherwise, I understand that AWR will not cover b/c it existed long before AWR insurance existed.

unclear why you think insurance would be responsible.
