Seeking advice/support to seal cracks in wall behind a decorative door frame

Does anyone know the best way to clean out and seal cracks in the wall behind the decorative frame of a vestibule’s inner door in a brownstone? So a very tall door which seems impossibly hard to reach the top of (for me at least) and because of position of the frame itself, there is about 3 inches to work with. The holes that need to be covered up are likely serving as nests for moths which won’t leave us alone. there are tons of cracks and dust and debris from 100+ years ago. would basic plaster be the way to go? @ cate, I have definitely seen/caught these to confirm they are clothing moths. Our house has been treated twice by GreenEarth already. The consistent problem area is in the vestibule. I now have it taped off from inside and outside to confirm/isolate that this is the main source location for us. Thank you!

@Stevecym, last night I actually put up 2 pheromone traps/tents above the door frame and didn’t catch any. I’m surprised, bc I can’t imagine any other place they are coming from in the vestibule, but it’s still early. Tape is also a good option – will think further.. TBC…. 🙂

Back to what Cate is saying and what I have said, is there any way to catch these things coming out of those cracks before you go further? Can you put cloth netting over the top of the door adornment to trap them in there and if they are not coming from there, keep others out. Could use the netting that they use on baby bassinets. Tape it around the adornment for a few days and if you have a few in there, bingo.

First be sure you have moths and not carpet beetles (or both) — if you’ve seen the critters already then you can already be sure. I suggest first vacuuming anything you can, ideally using a handheld ShopVac (plaster dust will ruin a household vacuum). Then I agree it could be wise to put some poison in there first. AFAIK you could use RAID (premetherin) or you could engage an exterminator to do it if you prefer. After that, caulk and ready mixed joint compound can seal cracks. Good luck.

A few days back I pulled the top interior casement off a door (facing the street and worth noting across from bob Marvin’s house) and that entire cavity was packed with insulation. I do not see a food source being behind that old plaster because they did not add insulation as they built back then but if someone removed the casement on the inside door and packed it with old natural fibre product, there is your problem.

Why not look at the casement and see if it looks like the nail heads had been disturbed. If they pulled it and reattached it using the old nails, they will have broken the filler used to hide them and you will see this on each nail. If they bent those nails on reinstall, they will have put a couple of bigger nails in their place, unless they were pros.

Look at the door and frame where the stop molding is. Is there any evidence that one time 80 years ago someone put insulating stop on the inner door? If so, they may have learned that i nsulating the inner door is the way to go and may have gone to town on that door putting insulation behind the casement as well.

IF I’m correctly interpreting the photographs these openings seem not to be visible from below. If I’m correct, and appearance isn’t an issue, I wonder if spray foam would be a good way to seal the openings after you spray with an appropriate insecticide?

I am thinking the nest and food source might not be right there. I would get an optic device and look inside. Once you find it, get a garden sprayer and stick the tube in there and blast it with liquid sevin.

Keep in mind, I went through this and am still not sure what these things were feasting on. I am afraid that if you seal this over w/o killing the nest, they may live in there with a never ending food source. If this were me, I might break some of that plaster off. Also, those wood adornments on top of the door are generally very easy to remove without damaging them. If you can do that you can look straight in.

Spray sevin or something in there. Malathion is good but smells bad. I should not be giving advice on pesticide use and in truth, I was once licensed for outdoor use but we used really bad stuff and is now illegal. I do not know how bad sevin is for use around women and children though malathion is used for head lice in other countries. I do use sevin on my lemon trees even when they are indoors.

Once you know you got the nest, you can cover that area with dashpatch. Or even spackle and some wide joint tape. It comes in widths, like 30″ rolls. But I would wait months to be sure.

Find something else to spray in there. This nest could be big. I dont want to tell you what I’d be putting in there be cause it might come with risks. I’d try to kill it before covering it.
