Security Gate lock hardware recommendations

We are replacing our under-stoop gate and I’ve gotten stuck looking for lock hardware options. Our current one has the pretty common Marks mortise lock. It works fine but we have a few issues with it.

The door knobs are hollow and very cheap and I haven’t been able to find higher quality ones that hold up well.

We’d prefer a cylindrical lock so we can potentially add a smart lock down the road.

I’d love to know what locksets others are using and how they like them.

thanks

on regular mortise sets, the spindle size determines the knobs. the rossette and knobs should work as a set but a lot of them can be switched around. most modern locks all seem to take the same size spindles (say baldwin or marks – i think 1/4″ x 20 tpi. split spindle. baldwin’s stuff for their knobs is unthreaded but the threaded spindles will fit).

i have not ordered or handled a thru bolted unit in years but i seem to recall that the lock body was the same and that you can move between thru bolted or regular spindle.

the problem with the through bolted is that on a very thin door the female thread parts stick out to hold the screws and if the door is really thin you can not tighten it up.

i am a retailer of a lot of this but i do not have a store front and i don’t keep a lot of stock around.

I agree that the thru bolted door knobs are awful – I haven’t found any good ones and when I replace this thing I want to make sure I don’t have thru bolted. Does the lock determine which kind of knobs or is the way that the lock is installed?

thanks again

so i NEVER deal with thru bolted door knobs. they are limiting.

i am thinking Progressive 3600 or 2400. those are solid brass knobs. But, progessive 2600 is a cheap, hollow set that is still a tad better than some of the really cheap stuff we see in corner hardware stores. i think the cheap stuff is made by Ultra Hardware.

Piscopo will do a thicker enclosure for a tubular – i’m trying to decide if it’s worthwhile. My wife wants a smart lock and they’re pretty much all designed for the tubulars. Maybe the best answer is a Marks or similar mortise lock and a smart lock exclusively on the bolt.

Are you talking about this from Progressive #K6220 Thru-bolted knob/rose assembly? Have you tried them?

Thanks very much, it’s a little hard to make sense of the options and neither the locksmiths nor the ironworkers seem to have much insight into options beyond their normal go-to solutions.

Progressive Hardware makes a heavy duty ball knob. they wholesale for like $36 a pair. not sure on retail. their regular duty brass knobs are also not that bad and i think wholesale for like 22 a pair.

So the mortise pocket and tubular bore are different from the get go and at 1.25″ thick these gates made for mortise pockets are not thick enough for tubular. It means a lot of shimming. I retrofit one for a smart lock at the start of covid and shimmed it with finish 1/4″ marine ply on each side.

As you plan this see if the gate makers will make a gate thick enough for the tubular. I am yet to see one.
