rusty railing
Our stoop railing needs work. Would the same advice as to mrsubtraction apply in this case? Steel brushing to remove loose paint and loose scale rust, followed by rusty metal primer, then two coats of oil base paint for metal? Or do we need more? Would the steel brush be held by hand, or attached to a drill? We plan on doing this work ourselves. Thanks! Note that the OP said he wants to do this himself. I don’t have a railing on my stoop, but I do have front window bars and an under-stoop gate. When I painted those myself I used a hand-held wire brush. I found brushes on drills ineffective. I simply wore a dust mask and swept up the paint chips. I painted with Rustoleum primer and oil-based glossy paint.

There are a lot of good iron places. Just google or search the forum. Last time I talked to Lopoppolo they didn’t seem into the scraping.. but there are a lot of good iron places in the city.

Ok no one is telling you who to use for this, and there’s a couple reasons why, but go ahead and call the brownstoner regulars, loppopolo and I think some guy named Rick and a few others and post back if you don’t like what you hear. Or also if you do like it.

We had ours taken off when we had a new stoop put in. The iron works will disassemble, strip and best of all replace and repair where needed . It is worth it.
You will need to watch your refurbished railings for rust spots and chips. Once a year touch them up.

while what urbandad is saying is correct, that it is better to strip this off site because of the old lead paint, i would first test it for lead. pay someone to test it and get a report (in case someone raises the issue). if there is no lead, you can take care of it on site with little worry. chemically stripping would be the safest way to go and if it had lead and was on my house or even if it had no lead, that is what i would do (for a good job). if it does not have lead, you can use any manner of wire wheels in drills and in die grinders. i would even say power wash it first and see what that does. also, if you have compressed air handy you can use a scaler.

Well if it were me, I’d hire a metal shop to do this off site. I wouldn’t want to brush all that lead paint into my yard and the street for one thing, plus it will be easier to do it in the shop with the equipment and chemicals they have, plus it can be painted in a more controlled environment. They’ll probably want to cut it and weld it back, but I’d try to get them to chip it out of the masonry whole and put it back in the same way if possible, and especially if you’ll be redoing the stucco on your stoop soon. At the bottom, I’m guessing there’s another cross bar in the cement. But if it’s too expensive that way, it may be possible weld it back in and sand and touch up the welds adequately, just make sure you know what the plan is and are happy with it.
