Rooftop HVAC installation

Does anyone have experience with new HVAC installation on the roof of an old building? If so, I would very much appreciate some advice and recommendations. I’m not sure where to start or who I’d hire, considering the job will need permits, new steel beams, curbs or dunnage (what’s that?), etc. Complicating factor is that we don’t have any easy access to the roof via a crane, as the house in set back off the street, behind another building… One recommendation we’ve gotten from an HVAC contractor is to build a sort of shed on the roof and install smaller indoor units. But to do this we’d still need permits, and, I assume steel beams, etc. We’d rather not do a mini-split unit, and would like prefer to use the existing ductwork. Thanks.

^Thanks. When you say you’d have preferred 2 smaller units, do you mean the compressor outside and air handler inside, rather than the 5T all-in-one?
If you would recommend your HVAC contractor, an engineer, etc–whomever you used–I would appreciate it. I’m not sure where (or with whom) to start. I’ve had a couple of HVAC contractors look at the job, but none quite have the solutions. So many I need HVAC engineer…? Again, not sure where to start. Thanks.

Not everyone gets permits….. cranes can reach over other buildings unless there is a very tall street tree. I have a single 5T package on steel beam dunnage, but I would have rather gone for 2 smaller units – however I didn’t have room for air handlers inside, and I needed everything to be outside. Not sure what advice you are seeking….
