Roofer still needed

I seem to be having the worst luck with roofers.

Every single one that has given me a quote, we set up a start date, check the weather, arrange with tenants and then no show and never answer the phone again.

Anyone want a job managing this job? Happy to pay Someone else to deal with no show roofers….

Sometimes when calling around to contractors, engage them in conversation on the phone and ask them questions about where they do most of their work or insurance. Ask what kind of roofs they work on. Play stupid with them and do not tell them you got their name from someone until much later. If the contractor is not willing to entertain a few short questions or is not willing to do what you want done, there is no point inviting them to your house..

Some things are simply not a good fit and it can be either the customer or contractor or both who reach that conclusion. The sooner the better for both.

Roofers are booked several months ahead.
When I had a leak and tenants, after the estimate, I called the roofer repeatedly and often to get the work done ASAP.

You’ve really only had one contractor flake on you. The first one with no license nor insurance was not a contractor. The second one was not willing to do what needed to be done and even if it did not need to be done he should have advised so and if you persisted, he should have said “ok, if you insist, I’ll take your money”; he was in it for a fast buck by going over it, that’s what happen there. Good riddance to him. The third one flaked on you and maybe he found a job with better parking and I would still bet he is not half as good as his father was.

I am sorry, but I had visions of someone a bit less experienced. If you are willing to spend the money, you the right to set the standard. If a contractor cannot deal with that, then it’s not a good fit.

Everyone I have called has been recommended by someone.
The first one to ghost me happened after I asked him for license and insurance information, so maybe I dodged a bullet.

The second quote, they just wanted to cover up and not actually repair the sub deck, so I said no.

The third was the son of my old roofer who passed away. He came right over, gave me a quote. My instructions to all of them is to do what ever it takes to fix it correctly. I never quibble about repairs. He set the start day, called that morning because it looked like rain and rescheduled for the following day. Never to be heard from since.

I am now holding my breathe on another roofer who was recommended by a brownstoner forum member. Hopefully this time we shall succeed in getting this done.

I am the one who always wants to err on doing more, rather than less. I don’t mind paying to get it done correctly.

I have had a successful boiler replacement, bathroom and kitchen gut. All fairly uneventful. This has just been really difficult.

I totally get what you are saying though, I know tha t parking in Boerum hill can be a challenge and maybe my job, while hugely important to me, may not be big enough for some because of logistics.

If Chris reads this, thank you sending me Carlos. Fingers crossed.

how many have you been through like this? if this happen with one contractor, blame him. two, start asking questions. and three, ask a lot of questions. assuming of course you are calling highly rated professionals.

are they telling you something or indicating something about certain conditions that they are not comfortable with? are they telling you one thing and are you trying to persuade them to do something else? are they saying replace the roof and you are saying patch it?

i am a contractor. i used to manage small to medium size jobs in large buildings and in a medium size residential condo complex. if a contractor does not want to do a job and is not making any sort of effort to get there, no professional is going to be able to say something to them to make them appear. the one thing a pro can get out of them is the truth as to why this is happening. if this happen two or three times on a commercial job with, say my predecessor, and i stepped in, if the contractors were people we really wanted to work with, I would call them, start a convers ation and ask what happen (i have done it). i would get the truth out of them. are they saying things to you that you are not hearing?

i have had to walk into many projects midstream and even when i started my own company, i began by finishing off work that others had abandoned, usually the final details, like the wood work. i would talk to the home owner or former manager, and get one story. weeks or months later, i would run into the former contractor on a line in a supply house or paint store and strike up a conversation, and i would get a completely different story. i cannot tell you how many times i heard “i was telling them they had to do this and they wanted to do that”. when you clear all the blame away (in residential projects), the root cause almost always goes back to one thing; money.

something is going on with these people. find out what it is and confront it.
