Roof Repair/Replacement Recommendations

Hi Folks,

I am looking for recommendations for a roofing company. I’ve called numerous vendors and as I’ve been warned, a lot of them are cash grabbers, looking to overcharge and recommend low quality work at a high price.

We have a flat roof with a small deck built on top of it and we need an assessment on either maintenance or replacement. I’d ideally like to update so it’s pitched for longer term sustainability before we replace the deck.

PSA – Helpful and non-biased responses only. If you are trying to be snakey and recommend your own roofing company as a pretend prior customer, don’t do it. You will just waste your time with me once I ask a million questions and sniff out the BS.

And I have a friend’s problem, the insurance company does not want to pay for roof repair, although the roof is damaged due to bad weather conditions.

Eman, you and i have worked in the building trades all of our lives. we don’t have to say what OP stated out loud because we wear it on our sleeve wherever we go. As we ask questions, contractors who are incompetent will either think we are going to be difficult customers (and we won’t get a quote from them) or we realize they are not who they say they are (in truth, they will not survive the first phone call. the visit will never happen; but most homeowners cannot learn that about a contractor on the phone).

i have been coaching people in how to deal with contractors and how to take what they know and either use it to engage a contractor in further conversation or be quiet and ask “stupid” questions and see what their answers are (and how they compare to what they, the potential customer, knows about the job – and this is easy to do with a roof).

Unfortunately, unless someone has grown up in this and looks like they swim in the detritus of their work, people like OP sometimes have to be a pain in the neck; their appearance alone will not do it. I recently had a conversation with my 80 yr old mom who worked for a real estate developer/owner and i asked her how she keeps men in this industry (she still deals with contractors for her own house but as she does i listen to her as she tells me what has to be done and what they will cost) from bs’ing her or talking down to her and she said it was hard at first but as time went on she could tell right away who was going to treat her how and if the conversation was not going right, she ended it. I asked “how did it get to that point?” She said, “by experience, it just goes that way.” I asked, “are you telling me your put your outer ‘b..ch’ on?” She said “exactly”.

Op, the roofers who are running around bs’ing people are not on this board.

I solved a problem for a customer whose “roofer” had made two unsuccessful attempts to fix and i solved that problem standing on the ground and in two minutes. they bought the roofer back and had him do what i told them to have done and it was done.

We and our neighbors have used Premier Roofing (Atlantic Ave Bklyn) – flat roof specialists. they have been around for over 90 years.

I am a Haag Certified Low Slope Roof Inspector as well as a leak investigator, former Building Manager and restoration contractor. I am currently a licensed Home Inspector as well as a building envelope project manager. My real focus is maintenance consultations and leak investigations.
