roof hatch / skylight combo

first off does anyone have any specific product recommendations. second of all, is this something a roofer is better to have install or is this a GC type of job? thanks to all!

The authorized installer probably has a contract with Velux that says if the product fails because the installation is botched, the installer must supply the labor to repair it, or some other type of arrangement that covers that. In your situation velux can replace the skylight itself if it were defectived, but has no power over your installer to make them correct the problem. And that unfortately is the region where your problem exists since you are unable to motivate royal to correct the installation.

Great point about authorized dealers regarding the warranty, their familiarity with the product and the support they receive. When I was looking for a boiler installer, the manufacturer provided the names of three installers. After researching the installers, I didn’t go with any of them. All of the above was probably true. However the way some of them treated their customers didn’t make me feel comfortable. Sometimes there are other kinds of tradeoffs.

Hi Urbandad, I contacted Velux prior to buying the skylights to ask about Royal, They said the warranty would be fine IF they followed the instructions. Royal said they would install according to the Velux specs – BUT they didn’t do that. I’m communicating with Velux now to try to resolve. They seem like a great company.

When you install something like this, there are usually authorized installers who have a relationship with the manufacturer the use of whom confers a better warranty and ensures stuff like the wires are in the right place, and they typically cost a little more to use. I’m guessing royal isn’t one of them. But it might be smart for you to check the velux website and identify one to help you with your problem in this situation as they usually know the product and get better support from the manufacturer.

By the way I’m not saying it’s always worth using an authorized installer, or that you made a mistake by not doing this, but at this point that could be your best bet. If royal is authorized, you should call velux and request warranty service.

Don’t dwell on it. If it makes you feel any better, I’ve made bad choices too. 1. Multiple listings are against Yelp policy 2. Royal came recommended on this forum 3. This isn’t about Royal per se… Some people are here promoting themselves sometimes under an alias which makes it hard for users to distinguish a real recommendation from a self promotional post. There’s one in this thread.

Slimc sorry you are having all these issues. The worst in my experience are the people that act confident when they have never done a specific type of work. Then don’t even take the time to read the manufacturer’s instructions or talk to the manufacturer. I’ve started reading that stuff just to be informed and on guard. But one shouldn’t have to do that. A roofer is preferable to a GC as GC’s typically will have less experience with skylights. But that doesn’t mean every roofer is an expert or that you might not find a GC who can do this work.

I completely disagree with the confidence in roofers. I am in the middle of a mess with Royal. They signed off on the exact velux model and flashing kit I purchased. I triple checked with them to make sure I bought the right ones. They told me they would install as per velux instructions so as to keep the warranty good. Then when they looked at the velux boxes, they said they were the wrong ones. Then they installed them incorrectly with the solar wires inside the house so I cannot hook up the solar panel that powers the skylight or the blinds. I can’t use the skylights and the warranty is likely voided at this point. Still trying to get them to correct the problem but their guys had NO idea what to do when they were here.

Velux makes good skylights. My personal preference would be a roofer as usually they guarantee the work. As with everything make sure manufacturer installation instructions are followed. Some GC’s will do it their way which may not be according to what is specified. If the GC is one that reads instructions and calls the manufacturer etc then you may be fine.
