Roof AC compressors--dunnage, rules, annual inspections, experiences
Hi everyone. I’m trying to figure out what the rules and requirements are for roof AC/heat pump compressors. Also looking for general opinions on the bast ways to do AC/heat pumps from a roof, and what folks’ experiences have been.
We’d like to do a total of maybe 6 tons, possibly across 2-3 compressors.
I’ve heard that anything over 3 tons requires an annual FDNY inspection (and also requires proper roof access through a door and roof railings and such). But I’m not sure if that’s a single unit over 3 tons, or 3 tons on the roof in total.
I’m also not clear on the rules around roof dunnage.
Really curious to hear folks’ stories on their roof AC/heat pumps. How many units of what tonnage? Did you do dunnage or something else? How expensive are annual inspections and what are they like? Did you permit or not? Recommended AC contractors? Etc.
Thanks!

I’ve since learned this is any single compressor over 3 tons. Multiple compressors adding up to more than 3 tons doesn’t trigger a need for an inspection. In case anyone ever finds this.
