Reuse Cast Iron Drain lines
This is ‘crazy’ question. We know that Cast Iron is considered the ‘better’ option for DWV systems.
We are working on a project that is fitting out an old industrial space with a new kitchen and two bathrooms.
We have access to ~20 year old used cast iron pipes that would probably be more than enough for us to do our project. However an internet search for ‘reuse cast iron pipe’ returns ZERO answers. I know it’s crazy right?
The used ‘No Hub’ pipe was flushed before being pulled and has been dry and unused for the past three years. Much of it was just used for the Vent, so didn’t see any black water.
If we are willing to clean and prep the pipe, is there any reason NOT to re-use it?
We are willing to sort it and organize it for the plumber to know what we have available.
Provided we can find a plumber willing to re-use rather than buy everything new….
We would rather keep the embodied energy in the existing pipe, using our labor to prep it, rather than send it to the recycler and pay for new. It is the greenest option from all sides.
I’m hopeful that someone with so me experience can say – it’s a lot of work but go for it, or I’ve done this and you will have problems later.
Note – we are not looking to be convinced that PVC is cheaper/better/easier/common etc.
The finished look of our space is raw exposed industrial and 1> we don’t want to hear the plumbing & 2> we don’t want to see the PVC. The much of the DWV piping system will be exposed to the living spaces.
And when we visit our family in their brand new homes, all we hear at the dinner table is the waste drains!
Thanks!
Sepp.
