Restoring landmark windows

Hello, After reading a few articles in This Old House (https://www.thisoldhouse.com/milton-house/21014994/saving-old-windows), I am interested in having our wooden landmark windows restored instead of replaced. Wondering whether anyone who has gone down this route has any feedback on how efficient/drafty the restored windows end up. Any recommendations on outfits that have experience in this area?

Sorry, I don’t log onto Brownstoner too much these days — a forthcoming sewer line replacement has me less than enthusiastic when it comes to talking “house stuff”.

Peter installed spring bronze on the jambs and weatherstripping along the meeting rail and the top/bottom rails. I added some felt strips up by where the chains run along the parting bead. It all does the job. You still get temperature transfer through the single pane of glass, but you should get Peter to make you some historic storms for the outside as well to solve that problem. There are also a handful of manufacturers that make them.

Check out articles in Old House Journal also re restoring windows and interior storms. AFAIK the interior storms aren’t visible, so are not ugly, but I’ve never seen them in person (unless you count the shrink-wrap with painter’s tape ones we lived with every winter for many years because of our failing — typical — replacement vinyl windows).

@colonialrevival: Just spoke to Peter briefly, who does, indeed, seem pretty knowledgeable. What type of weatherization did you have done, and how drafty are the windows now? Peter seems to be anti double pane and pro felt strips? He also thinks that the main thermal loss is due to the unavoidable pocket for the counter sink.

Also. When we do entry doors, we cannot seal them 100%. Some air leaks through, convection. Some convection is not bad and some air is good; a lot has been written about the rise of “sick” buildings since we began the intense insulation of houses in the mid 70’s.

Imho, the “bad” cold is conduction; the cold that passes through glass and other solids. I think of this as “bad” because it brings no benefit as it makes our houses colder.

The preservation arm of the government parks service has a technical document explaining how to maintain historic windows: https://www.nps.gov/tps/how-to-preserve/briefs/9-wooden-windows.htm Also as Tinkers Wagon points out above, there are many books on how to maintain historic windows, including Working Windows. Generally speaking, properly maintained and with storms (can be interior storms) historic windows will offer better insulation than modern replacement windows (and they will last for a very long time). If you are still getting drafts after all your fixes, check the cavities around the windows, cracks in adjacent interior paneling, facade insulation, facade repointing, etc.

People on this board know about a book called Working Windows by terrance meany. You may wish to have a look at that.

I did read the posted article and suspect many of the windows in brooklyn will need more work than the examples the author speaks of. I am thinking that sash will have to be made anew, not simply rebuilt (this is why i never got into this work).

Olek Lejbzon in Jersey rebuilds windows and window sash and i am sure can make new.

Keep your windows if in good condition. However choose the company replacing the glass carefully to ensure they understand both historical preservation and how insulated window glazing works. The historic companies sometimes do not understand U value implications well enough. Also make sure around the windows is air-sealed and insulated properly.
