Repoint Rear Brick Wall
We are in the midst of the large reno and didn’t account for the need to repoint the rear wall of our brownstone. Wondering if anyone has any good recommendations and what some cost estimates are – we got a quote but cant teal if its reasonable or not. In addition, is it better to just re-point or to explore alt options like paint or stucco? Our GC show us that the mortar has softened and there are some bricks and areas that need to be repaired. We believe we should do it, but want to make sure we consider all options.

Sure! What’s your email? I’m not seeing it pop up.

@Annep, can you share your contact as well? Need to do a similar project here and have gotten two wildly varying quotes ($4K and $12.5K).

even if you plan to paint or stucco you still need to repair the brick and mortar first.

Our back wall was ground + pointed with lime mortar before having a clear sealant applied — it was part of a much larger project, but it looks like the the grinding/mortaring was 10.5K for a three story brownstone, 1.2K for the lime mortar itself & then there were the scaffolding/permit/office costs on top of that.

Some of the old mortar on these houses always remained soft.
There was a post on here about 2 weeks ago where someonne inquired about pointing their rear wall. A lot of responses.
Fyi, you need someone who works on old stuff. No lie, in 1984 i did some work on a wall from the mid 1870’s and thought the same thing about the old mortar. I used modern mortar to work on it. Years later i learned what i did was wrong and that the old bricks are softer and can be damaged by modern product. Get someone who works on this stuff.
