Has anyone replaced the main beam of their house with a steel one recently? If so, Can you recommend the contractor who did the work please? Thanks a bunch!

I’ve done it, worked out great, had to shore up the existing joists until the new concrete pads were poured and then the structural steel columns erected, then the steel girder installed. A bit costly but so worth it. The contractor is Ted 917.440.4321

Make that addition cost, not strength. Auto correct strike again.

Absolutely a permit (though I have done them in the past without, but Brooklyn was different then)
Inserting one beam can be easy or hard, depending on the height above grade, or below. In the past we have had to excavate the front yard to insert beam from street. Remember – the beam does not bend.
Architects these days make you get a structural engineer at additional strength, because they don’t want the liability. You can see my previous rants about structural engineers, it’s too late to make a long story short.
Our theory was to make a girder that was supported properly and stronger that it needed to be. Then remove the old beams and columns.
Then using 30 ton bottle jacks we would lift the support wall as much as we could and insert metal plates on top of new beam to maintain the un-sagged height.
YMMV

We did this in our 2 story brownstone almost 3 years ago. Same situation, original wood girder had about 2/3 damaged by termites. Replaced the girder and original brick piers with steel girder, new steel piers with required footings and steel c-channel joists along several of the wood ceiling joists that were damaged.

George from Payless Ironworks, 917.709.7897. I found him through recommendations here on Brownstoner. Good luck!
