Replacing my oil boiler?

Hi. My oil boiler is great – I’ve got steam radiators – but of course oil prices are going up and wondering what practical alternatives are? Is gas any better? Is there any other alternative that is more green? Thinking about solar panels as well but don’t think this has anything to do with my heating system? Thanks!!

I’m in a unique position to give a great price on a new steam boiler right now to one lucky customer. Details later. I offered it to someone looking to do what you’re doing but they hit a snag. The cost to do the required asbestos removal turned out to make the whole job cost prohibitive, so they’re sticking with oil. The previous owner of the home, the Seller, was supposed to have done the asbestos removal but they (maybe did it themselves?) did a half-baked job and a real company has to come in and do it and certify the work area is asbestos free now. Ugh.

An oil to gas conversion generally runs around 13,000. the DOB inspections and code compliance are a pain in the ass and can drag out the project. this is my trade so contact me if you want me to take a look at your specific conditions. errol832000@hotail.com

With steam rads, I think gas is your only option. It’s not practical to convert the radiators to hot water, and would require new plumbing anyway. The gas is much cheaper than the oil though, maybe 1/3 the price or so. Minisplit is probably the way of the future.

Is your oil boiler nearing the end of its life? It doesn’t make financial sense to replace it unless it is close to expiring. Hot water radiators are the best, IMHO, followed by steam, and AFAIK you need either oil or gas to service radiators. Converting to gas was always a bit expensive and a bit of work, but may be even more difficult now. Some people will say you can do HVAC/ac/heat and with solar too but, just my two cents, I’m not a big fan of forced air or electric heat in the northeast.
