Replacing my boiler?
My Steam Boiler is still working however it is dated 1982 and I would rather have the peace of mind of replacing it now with a new one. The house is a 3 family brownstone . Each apartment is about 1000 sq feet . I’m looking for a recommendations and some input on what the ballpark cost of the project would be to remove the old boiler and install the new one and install a chimney liner .Thank you. Photos of the boiler I have [Boiler 1](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:g5Ep:boiler1.jpg.jpg) [Boiler 2](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:lP7C:boiler2.jpg.jpg)

It’s the configuration of the piping immediately above the boiler. It’s called a header and you haven’t got one. Its purpose is to allow water vapor to separate from the traveling steam as it exits the boiler and moves toward the distribution system. When steam carries water vapor, the steam condenses prematurely and a big chunk of the fuel you burned to turn water into steam (a gas) is wasted as many many BTUs worth of heat will return to the boiler or be lost to the distribution system before reaching the radiators. This is what I can see from the pictures you posted and I’m not confident there’s a lot of good happening outside those frames.

Thank you for the input. Can you guys please tell me what makes this a terrible installation? What are the items that were left off the boiler that should be there? Thanks!

Leave the boiler as is if the cast iron block is not damaged and the boiler is not undersized. Redo near boiler piping and upgrade the rest. Besides obviously terrible installation, half of the things needed for the proper operation were not installed. Do not touch the gas. Upgrade the heating system as well.

I realize it’s been that way for 40 years but that’s actually a terrible installation. A new boiler, installed well, is going to give you better heat. Maybe quieter too. A good replacement to match the *square feet of EDR* steam output of that boiler is the Weil-McLain EG-50, which is what my company would offer you in a proposal. That said, it’s always better to let the prospective installer do a load calculation first before they propose a product. No one knows where the sizing of the existing boiler came from. www.GatewayPlumbing.com
