replacement glass for skylight

In the house we are renovating there is a skylight with a vent going through it. Since we are removing the vent, we need new glass for the skylight. Any recommendations as to what we should look for (wired glass? something else?) and where we should get it? Thanks!

that wire glass might be a little thinner than 1/4″ lami and might fit easier.

wire glass is not as cheap as it used to be. they now consider it a “vintage” specialty item. 20 years ago it was considered cheap and utilitarian.

We ended up getting replacement wire glass from Bernie’s Glass and Mirrors on Fulton St. It was a long bus ride for me (we’re in Greenpoint) but it was less than half the price I was quoted by a glass store in Queens, and they cut the glass for me while I waited. Also wrapped it carefully in cardboard. My husband installed it today – says the cuts were perfect. If you go, take cash or maybe a check; I’m pretty sure Bernie’s does not accept credit cards.

I read somewhere that when replacing those old lantern style skylights you need to keep the new model elevated above the roof and with wire glass (I believe to stop firemen falling through). Is that true or can you just have a Velux installed?

We replaced our main stack vent a while back and our roofer coordinated with the plumbers and replaced the skylight.

JohnHancock and dork are right. You’re better off replacing the skylight rather than a pane. Often older skylights are poorly insulated and after a while, there can be the potential for air and water leaks. It’s seems like a good time to just take care of the whole thing. Replace with an energy efficient model that is installed to be air/water tight. Sometimes fixing an area may end up costing more than we think. Then a few years down the road, you may have to replace the whole thing anyway. Get estimates and compare both options, then decide.

What mdr states is correct but as we install lami in place of often older glass, we must be aware that the lami is often thicker and that can create issues and the person making the swap has to be ready with a work around. Not sure what this might mean on a skylight.

Are you looking to replace the glass and not the whole skylight? If so, then use laminated glass. It is stronger and will stay together if broken (like wire glass).

you’ll want insulated glass rather than replacing single pane glass. so much heat gets lost. velux is what most ppl do. most roofers should be able to swap these out.
