Renting: Can Landlord Install Swinging Window Gate?
Renting in a new building (<2yrs old). Bedroom window opens out on to the fire escape. Currently no bars or other security measures on the window (obviously, because fire escape). We've had intruders come into the building, run up to the roof (accessible roof) and come down the fire escape in the back. I know this is a typical means of B&E into apartments, sneak in the front door, run up to the roof, climb down the fire escape and break in through the windows. MY question is this: Is the landlord (legally?) required to install security measures on windows that open on to fire escapes? I've seen the safety gates that swing open from the inside in the event of a fire. I fear the answer is no, they do not have to install anything, but I figured I'd ask. Thanks in advance.
