Renter's Insurance

I know this group is mostly owners (as am I) but I am wondering if anyone here has a recommendation for a renter’s insurance company? Would like to get coverage for my kids. I know I could go to my homeowner’s insurance. Just interested in others’ thoughts who might have experience. TIA.

I have many tenants using Lemonade. They once paid out for a tenant negligence kitchen fire without much trouble on property management end. That was the only damage I have had to work with them about

GEICO doesn’t underwrite apartment owners insurance. They act as an agent for another company. I think it is Assurant. And my advice is to absolutely avoid them – they denied my claim related to the bad storm we had a couple of weeks ago. I couldn’t even get the adjustor to come out to look. I have heard Lemonade, the online provider, is good but don’t know anyone who had a claim.

this is a long long time ago for me but i think what i would do is check if all of the renter’s policies are written to the same form (the way homeowner’s are basically the same- HO3?) and if they are, from there i would just go with a better name company. you can check the on-line ratings to see.

what i mean by better name is one that does not haggle a claim down to nothing. for instance, i have geico on my cars and have had a full loss claim and they fought over every nickel. that is ok with my crappy second-hand cars but i would NEVER have gieco for my homeowner’s insurance. Your children might not want them renter’s (i just checked, they do offer renter’s ins).

know that the better company may use the same form as the cheaper company but you will pay more. the reason i carry geico on the cars is because it is cheap.

also, consider if there is something additional to be added as listed. when i rented i did not have anything special but now for instance i have a lot of tools and i made sure they are covered. in the case of some young people, this might mean pricey computer gear or sound equipment. check limits on these things and the cost to have them specifically listed if need be. you will pay more to have these items listed above and beyond the limits of the policy.
