Removing a fireplace mantel

Anyone have any tips on removing a fireplace mantel from a home? I’d like to keep it intact

If it is marble; get a marble contractor or at least a stone mason to do it and try not to take it out until you are ready to reinstall it where it is going at the same time.
If it is wood, then get a restoration carpenter with some masonry experience.
Take good pictures before you start dismantling it, so that you can use them as a guide to the jigsaw of putting it all back together again.
