I used their interior products and I love them! They are on the pricier side, but I got a great deal on hardwood, so it balanced out. Am very happy with look and wear.

Re: pressure treated pine, they are using new chemicals to preserve that don’t require a full year to accommodate. New recommendations are to stain or paint when moisture content is about 10%. The wood dries out much quicker now and a full year is too much. A carpenter I am working with informed me of this change.

@Daveinbedstuy – I’ll check out Arborcoat. I’ve been using Rubio Monocoat products to great results.

Home Depot & Loews have white cedar fences. I just ordered a privacy white cedar fence from HD @ $64 a panel. They also have the shadow box white cedar fences.

PT pine will serve you well if cared for. No, don’t treat or stain for a year and then do it every 5 years or so. I have a deck at a house that I put in back in 1994 and it still looks great. And that was back when there were few stains for PT.

More recently I have been using the Arborcoat stains which come in a variety of color and lucency finishes.

White cedar is preferable both in looks and in rot resistance. Pressure treated pine is a good cheaper alternative. PT pine should not be painted or stained for at least a year.

Thanks for this information! I’ve since contacted Midwood lumber and Meserole Lumber, and neither have it. I

MDR – interesting what you say that about white cedar. I actually prefer the look, but read that red is more durable. re. PT pine – do you let the pine cure for a year or can it be painted/stained right away?

Thanks again!

Red cedar is actually not that great for fencing, white cedar has much better rot resistance. I’ve found white cedar at Condon Lumber in Westchester. It was a few years ago so I’m not sure if they still have it.

You might also consider pressure treated pine. I just put up a fence using pressure treated 1×6 boards that I bought at HD and it looks pretty good. I don’t know if it will last as long as cedar but I think it should be good enough.

Hi, this is Adam Brown, project manager for Peter Di Natale & Associates, Inc. Not only do we work on a lot of jobs in Brooklyn, I also live there, but prefer Rosenzweig Lumber in the Bronx. It’s the best hardwood vendor I use in the cabinet shop. Home Depot carries some red cedar but apparently not in the Brooklyn locations. Perhaps they would have it shipped from their other locations. Hope this info is useful. If we can be of any assistance please take a look at our work at www.dinataleassociates.com.
