Recommendations for vendor to help with leaking skylight

Hi, I have a leaking skylight on the roof of my brownstone in Brooklyn Heights. Does anyone know of a roofer or other contractor who might have knowledge in this area?

prkslope1234, why did royal have to come back several times? I’m in the middle of a “situation” with them and am curious about your experience.

I really appreciate everyone’s feedback to the OP on this.

thought I’d circle back around. We had Royal out for an estimate. It was much higher than I thought. We need a new skylight, the curb rebuilt and flashing etc. So it’s not a huge job, though a bit labor intensive.

My reaction of course, is “ouch, I can do that myself for a third of the quote“. But, it’ll take me a week (and 5 trips to HD and Lowes) to get it all done; (Squeezing it into my own work schedule). Them, it’s probably three guys in one day. Done. And, I’m not breaking my back.. On the other hand, I’m almost never satisfied they’ll do as thorough and tidy a job as me. It’s a dilemma.

I’ll call more roofers for quotes. A time consuming job on its own.

Neighbor had a terrible experience with JJ Roofing and their owner John… do not use. Warranty on the roof was not honored.

Used Royal Renovators to help with a roof leak and they were overpriced and had to come back several times afterwards. They also were hesitant to give itemized pricing which is a red flag. The initial salesman is good at “selling” their higher price but the work was average at best. Ended up using Verrazano Roofing for another project and was much happier and cheaper. I think all the talk of higher pricing being higher quality can be total bs.

Repeating what Nina R says, we had Royal by and the estimate, knowledge process etc were really impressive and thorough. I also had a basic old time Brooklyn place who suggested the best move was to add another layer, to a roof with like 8 layers on it. no thanks.

Also we have a skylight leaking from seams, and seems the solution is indeed, as others have suggested previously, to caulk the top and sides of the glass where it meets the metal with silicone caulk. (Bottom should be left uncaulked to allow moisture to escape). On the exterior of the skylight, the metal seams are one piece so water cannot penetrate there.

I’m getting an estimate for just this thing tmrw morning (plus a steel hatch and a vent). My friend recommended Royal Renovators Roofing. She had her entire roof redone with them and was happy with the speed and quality of the roof install. I’ll try to circle back around and let you know if I like them or not. I’m pretty fussy. I do most of my own work. So it’s tough for me to release this kind of job to someone. I just don’t have time right now to take it on. I’m gonna call New York Skylight and see if I can get a second opinion out here.

I posted a question like this last year – I ended up getting the old fashioned skylight replaced with a modern Velux skylight by New York Skylight Installers. Couldn’t be happier with them, their work, and the result. I imagine they might do repairs as well.
