Recommendations for flipping a shower door and resulting tile work

We have a glass shower door on metal hinges that was installed the wrong way round (hinges on the left instead of the right), and we need to find someone to flip the door so the hinges are on the right. The hinges are affixed to tile, so two tiles will need to be replaced. The plastic door stop will need to be moved as well.

1. Who do I need to find to do this work? A shower door person? A tile installer? Both?

2. Any recommendations?

A bifold shower door might be a good solution in this space, but obviously more involved than the doorstop solution, which might work nicely for you.

baseboard door stop just below or above the low hinge to prevent from hitting toilet. mount something on wall not the curb, but not too close to the bottom of the door because of stress on the glass; wider the better.

you may need to take that idea and refine for proper length etc. maybe a piece of wood or PVC etc with the silicone tips drilled or glued on.

I feel very stupid. We wanted to flip the door because it currently hits the toilet, but you are absolutely right. If we flip it, it will hit the door to the bathroom. I guess we’ll just have to be careful with not hitting the toilet.

@brokelin, we are thinking the door is a double action unit that can be reversed without flipping it upside down.

@ urbandad: you are reading me wrong. this should not be a day or even close. if the OP can have the tile on site and some PL Premium there for the person to affix the tile with, this should be nothing. a half a day at the most.

I’ll add one more step to the list: Move the shower doorknob (as it will now be very high on the door) – or add a second one lower on the door if removing it causes problems with the glass.

I also think the GC put on the shower door opening this way to avoid bumping the door to the bathroom. If that is the case (it is hard to guess the entire room layout from the photo) that the doors have less chance of hitting each other this way, I’d consider leaving it as is.

Alternately, as if often done with small brownstone bathrooms to increase room inside the bathroom, depending on the room layout and what is outside the door, you might consider rehanging the bathroom door so it opens to the outside of the room, not the inside.

I agree, dealing with the tile is what makes it more than a couple hours. And there’s setting up, cleaning up, maybe a trip to the hardware store, matching the grout, etc.

urbandad: a days work including sourcing tile and cleaning up. years ago, i installed a few glass shower door units and once we had the materials, we are talking a couple of hours including picking up the trash. even with cutting down the cross rails on the bypass units, its fast. the only reason i have not put myself forth here to flip it is the person who does this should do the tile and i don’t feel like getting involved in that.

You can do it, it’s not easy like changing a lightbulb, but it’s probably a day of work for a decent handyman. First, determine if you really want to do this. It looks to me like the door will be more frequently hitting the entry door to the room in the new position, and that might not be good. Also, a nice shower curtain would solve this problem, and allow entry from either side of the shower.

With the deccision to move the door made, and assuming the door is a double acting door that can be reversed, which you should be able to tell by inspecting it, then you’d need to:

1. Remove door, protect floor.
2. Chisel out tiles that were drilled, and any adjacent tiles that might break when chiseling. Try not to damage any waterproof underlayments. Consider filling the holes behind the tile with thinset and redguarding them over if it looks like a problem, but in that spot it’s probably overkill.
3. Mix thinset, and apply replacement tiles(which I assume you have).
4. Identify anchoring hardware and check suitability of framing to support the weight of the glass.
5. Attac hing the hinges/glass door with appropriate screws or bolts. Now I would leave it up to whoever is doing the work to decide if the glass should be separated from the hinges while the hinges are installed, I would probably do it that way if the door design allowed, which I imagine it would, and that seems far easier than trying to hold a heavy glass plate in place while screwing it down.
6. With the door attached, the new tiles need to grouted, and then later washed down.

At that point your project is complete. Probably can be done in one day, although technically the thinset should dry at least overnight before grouting.

i have not installed anything like this in years and years, but if i recall, these kind of things are designed to be “handed” either way. if i were there, i would look at it and know right a way if it can be flipped. i think it can. i think they make them that way so consumers don’t have to worry about handing.

hey, who made the product? is there a name? is it from a big box store? if there is a name, anyone of us can look it up and see if it is handed.

The GC installed it but it’s a finger-pointing situation at this point, unfortunately.

The hinges are attached to the glass, but we’re hoping the hinges can stay on the shower door as is. I’ll attach a photo so please let me know if I’m missing something, but we’re hoping all that needs to be done is:

1. Remove the hinges from the tile on the left side of the opening
2. Turn the door around with the hinges attached
3. Screw the hinges into the right side of the opening
4. Replace the two tiles on the left side that will have holes from where the hinges are now.

Thank you for the shower door company info. I worry, though, that because no real work needs to be done to the shower door, they won’t be interested.

Start with a shower door company for ideas. I’ve used Crystal Glass, but there are others like Mirage and Williamsburg Glass to name a few. I can’t wholeheartedly recommend any of them so maybe someone else can make recs.

Who screwed up? Get them back.

It’s hard to imagine exactly, but if the glass was drilled for the hinges it will need to be replaced (unless it can be reversed). You may or may not need tile work. Depends if you can put the brackets in the same spot.
