Rainwater Containment Tanks (the underground kind)??

In our ongoing effort to prevent basement flooding, we’re now considering giant rainwater containment tanks–the kind that hold the roof runoff until the city sewers are not overflowing, so it can then run out instead of backing up or acting like a geyser under my house. Anyone have this done? If so, any recommendations for contractors? Or general advice? We have been planning to get the yard redone in the near future, so it seems like a good thing to pair with that… Thanks.

i don’t know if anyone said it but i just read Master Plumber’s comment because he speaks with experience; what he is saying is the reason they are installing these “gravel beds” around the city. they are made to catch water during these storms and deal with it locally as opposed to flooding the sewer. that water will flow down and pass through the gravel like a french drain and my guess, and i may be wrong, is that the soil up top is there to catch the contaminants and oils. there is a name for these, bio something. we now have some on our street.

If waste is backing up in your house and it is not a problem with your line then it may a partial obstruction in the city’s sewer pipe. The sewer pipes were usually designed to handle plenty of flow, but grease and debris sometimes build up and create an obstruction. Ask your neighbors if they have the same problem. If they do, it is certainly a problem with the city sewer and you should report the problem to the city. If it cant be fixed you could use a backflow preventer to stop flow from the sewer from coming into your house but you would then also not be able to get rid of any waste or water during storms so those storage tanks would be necessary but would have to be engineered carefully. You could also get rid of any drains connected to the sewer in the cellar, so it would take more pressure and be less likely for sewer water to back up into the house. You would have to use a sump pump instead for any cellar drainage.

Brooklyn storm sewers are frequently overwhelmed nowadays. If you don’t have a problem on your block then you’re lucky. Many people are forced to deal with this every time it rains and solutions are rarely ever inexpensive or foolproof. You may have noticed we don’t just get rain anymore, we get these incredible deluges on the regular. Many city sewer systems just can’t convey the volume of water we’ve been seeing and that water needs somewhere to go. When it ends up in your basement or cellar, you’ve got to come up with something to prevent it. Check or “backwater” valves only help so much and present their own problems.

Thanks, MDR. But why would it only be a problem during heavy rains? I don’t think we have an undersized waste line. (Neither of the sewer companies I’ve had out to inspect it have said as much.) This was not such a problem before a new (enormous) apartment building went up on our street (upstream)…

I know you said that everyone else’s drains handle the heavy storm water, but I’ve read so many threads on here the past few years where people describe the same problem–during heavy rains only. So for some reason a lot of us seem to be struggling with this. Some people have said they got backflow prevention valves installed, but the last sewer guy I had out here said you can’t do that if your downspout runs into the sewer line because the valve closes, of course, which means the runoff has nowhere to go, so then you’ll flood your roof. So… what to do??

I don’t know specifically what type of house or lot you have or what size waste line, but if it is a typical house and lot you should not have this problem. Mine and everyone else’s drains handle the heavy storm water. What is different about your situation? Is your waste line undersized? If your yards are paved and impervious that would create greater than normal runoff. Yes, a drywell or retention tank would slow down the storm flow, but underground tanks will be very expensive for you. I still think you may have a drain problem, like when a bathtub or kitchen sink drains slowly. Something is constricting the drain so it doesn’t flow properly.

We do install them but we typically work off an Engineer’s plans. The Codes governing detention tanks go beyond that of a plumber’s expertise and there are always logistical challenges involved a well.

Most of the renovations my company is involved with lately do indeed employ rainwater detention tanks. It’s becoming pretty well standard issue in homes with a larger footprint.

I already got french drains and had the pipes inspected. It’s only a problem during hard, heavy, fast rain. Have had several pros out working on it but so far no good solutions…

i have some thoughts on this as i dug a big pit in my own yard and short of putting a barrel or tank in to hold the water, i did install a large diameter pipe 8′ down into the ground with a lot of rock around it and a french drain running across the back yard to the vertical pipe.

you do not simply want a tank. my guess is you will want to use the tank to create a “dry well”. if you use a tank, it will hold the water but if you drill holes in it, it will let the water run out into the earth. here where i live, we have clay and the weight of the incoming water forces the lowest water out (my thought; i am not a hydrologist, if that is the term).

these things are not that common in the city and we had them where i grew up and people had to be careful with them. when they get old and dry out or sit empty, they can collapse which may be why Arkady suggests a french drain first. people forget about them and they only find out about them decades later when a kid goes missing. for mine, i used an 8″ pipe back filled with stone and capped with an elbow that connec ts to a horizontal pipe. all this had to be strong enough to support vehicles.

If sewer water is backing up and entering your house then you should contact the city, that is not supposed to happen and would indicate a problem out at the street. If rain water from your roof and backyard are backing up into the house that means you have a partial blockage in your waste pipe that prevents the water from draining properly to the sewer pipe under the street. I would look into these issues first.
