Radiator noise/banging

Hi, I live in a 4 unit brownstone building and we’ve been having issues with with our radiators/heating pipes making a HUGE amount of noise (in the winter, when they’re on).

The noise seems to be most active in the mornings when the heating is starting up (after being off for most of the night), and also generally more in the beginning of the winter than towards the end. It sounds as if someone is banging the heaters/pipes with a hammer. We’re hoping to find someone to diagnose/fix the problem this summer, before the heating goes on again.

It has been suggested to us that we should shim the radiators so that they’re pointing down, towards the pipes. This has already been done long ago (at least in my apartment) so this doesn’t seem like a solution.

If anyone has any experience solving a similar problem, and/or any suggestions for who we could contact about this, it would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

Sorry, Eman. Just like my mom says: Johnny is very special. Therefore, I don’t usually need to run the steam to see where there’s a problem. But you’re right, getting everything hot from a cold start does help present problems as the client experiences them.

the reality of the problem is that it cannot be solved off heating season… john at gateway is a great resource as is (myself errol832000@hotmail.com), alladin plumbing, chris at petri and gennady at Absolute mechanical…

It’s rarely ever a radiator pitch problem. Life should be so simple. Hot water and steam Heating System Evaluations are mostly what I do. www.72Fmechanical.com is where to find me.
I’m also a partner at Gateway Plumbing and Heating with my brother and cousins.
