Raccoon removal

Has anyone experience with dealing with and/ or removing racoons? I’ve spotted one walking the Verizon wires between Putnam and Jefferson backyards a couple of times recently. Yesterday my ground floor neighbor found her trying to get in his garden level kitchen window! He’s an upstate guy and based on his experience says she’s definitely looking for food for a new litter of babies. There is no food, garbage, compost in mine or the surrounding gardens. Does anyone have nay experience in removing them?

Any raccoons caught must be killed as trapping it and setting it free somewhere else is forbidden in NYS.

They get used to people. The one i had as a pet when i was a teen would come to me and climb my legs when i went to feed it. It scratched me and ripped a pair of jeans and i wanted it gone. We had to lock it out of its cage to make it go away and after a few days it went in the neighbor’s garage, probably looking for food, and cleared an entire shelf of paint cans and garage items onto the floor.

That neighbor down the block is making these things so used to people that now we cannot tell if it is sick or not. I just hate to see harm come to it if it is ok.

Thanks Steve . Having her scratch the window gave me pause. I wasn’t concerned seeing her in the distance. The cats don’t feed outside but there is neighbor further down the block that feeds cats outside and I’ve seen the raccoon feeding there.

I just looked at photo again. It is smaller and probably female and possibly wanting food for the babies. By the way, if you ever feed the cat outside, the raccoons will eat the cat food and get used to having it there.

I just looked at that photo. Honestly, we have had them come near the house on long island but i have never seen them that close in the city. If that was me, i would open the door or window and either yell at it or throw something at it to make it go away. If it does not go away when you do that, i would be concerned.

We are used to this on long island and my father had one in his garden a few years back. I did not know it was there and went to go in the garden and it bolted as fast as it could – up and over a fence- to get away from me. If you open the door (and don’t do it with it close by), and it does not run, something could be wrong.

Keep your kids inside for the time being.

The only other reason i could see one coming this close is if someone has been feeding it. This is the problem with us feeding wild animals.

They have been here longer than we have and they are one of those creatures that have adapted well to urbanization. We have a pair over here where i live and sometimes i will be taking my trash out as the sun is coming up and they will pass by me on the other side of our community drive. I grew up in an area that had a lot of them and for a while as a youth we kept one as a pet. I am not afraid of them but i give them distance and warn my son about them and all wild animals. Stay away from them. Yes, they do carry rabies but unless one is purposely approaching you and worse, approaching you during the day, i would not be concerned. Any animal that should run from you that approaches you should be considered unwell and yes the authorities should be called (they killed 26 rabid coons in central park in one year a decade ago).

There is no point in having one removed as five more will take its place. I had a customer in kew gardens that had a garage full of them.

I did read something on line that said the chances of seeing them out during the day go up this time of year because the females would go out looking for food for their babies.
