Questions about water main replacement
So we have a slow but certain leak into the basement of our brownstone. A few plumbers have come to take a look, and while they feel it is coming form the main, they are sure if it is a city issue, or something we would be responsible for. Should I call the DEP? Any suggestions? Am hoping the city will help pay for this…eeks. Thanks!!

My job ended up costing $6,800 which was in line with the other 3 quotes I received. I did ask Harris why it was so much as others told me a water line replacement should cost around 4k. They went into extreme detail to assist me in understanding all of the variables they factor when pricing a water main replacement. Some of the factors were if it is a new roadway, how many holes in street/sidewalk/property etc……

greenact – i used harris. I am not certain about the setback issue, if more holes are needed for those with setback vs those without, but i know that the cost of the copper pipe is not that significant for the job. You can buy 60ft of 1″ type k copper coil for $350 online. So this job is really a labor related one as far as price goes – and more holes would definitely mean more cost. I had two holes – one in front of the house and one in the street. Perhaps that detail should be revealed when discussing price here on the thread.

dorkofwindsor we had ours replaced in Feb and got a few different quotes. I think that’s the going rate these days. Maybe you got a bargain!

Homeowner’s insurance won’t cover the replacement. They would only cover damage from the leak.

You DO have to be careful about which company you use. A number of years ago one of my neighbors had their water main replaced and had to have it done again < a year later. It turns out the fly-by-night company they used, which had vanished by the time their main failed, had used black iron gas pipe instead of copper!

The price varies a lot depending upon where the main is located — i.e., which side of the street, how wide the sidewalks are, how far back the houses are set etc. Totally logical that harris could charge $3500 for one job and $9k for another. We had to replace the old lead line coming into the house about 10 years ago. We ended up paying about $5k as I recall. The main is on our side but the house is set pretty far back.

well you should start a water main company and undercut the other guys because I got 3 bids to upgrade my domestic water main and none were less than double that number.

Around $3,500 is the standard price for a water main unless you have sprinklers or other complications.
Carmen, tree roots grow into sewers, not water mains. That $17k job was definitely a sewer. Sewers cost $12k and up.

holy moly, this must be the busy season. I paid $3500 to have water main replaced (main on my side of street) in the winter. Green cat – unless you purchased the American Water Resources insurance through the city recommended program, i’d speculate that it is your responsibility. You would have to prove that the leak is coming from the hookup at the water main in the street – anything along the pipe from your house to the street is all your responsibility (same with sewer pipe).

i had my main upgraded a few months ago by Harris. $9000. could have been slightly cheaper but the pipe was on the far side of the street so they had to dig 3 holes rather than 2.

We just replaced our water main and it was about $6k if I remember correctly. We were able to hook in pretty close to our house so YMMV- a neighbor had to dig up half of the block for his. Our GC is doing a job on a brownstone near the park and tree roots had grown into the water main… cost the owner $17k to replace! I think it’s highly dependent on where you need to hook into the city main.

A broken/leaking sewer line to your property is your responsibility from your property all the way out into the street to the connection to the main street sewer line. That said it is good to have DEP come and confirm that it is actually leaking, there are many sewer and water main companies that will tell you it needs replacing not matter if it did or not. Especially the cheaper “bargain” companies.

Harris Water & Sewer is the prime company in the 5 boroughs with a great reputation. I have used them for many years and see their trucks all over the place
