Question re primer and outdoor wood steps
I am going to have outdoor wooden steps painted. Intend to use Ben Moore Fredh Start as primer. Local hardware store said they cannot tint it to color of finish coat. What has been your experience with this if any. Intend to use Ben Moore porch & Floor for finish coat. Do you think that will be best paint to use for this project? Thank you!

OP, i do not want you to think there is anything wrong with water based paint and perhaps primer. a lot of these products have come a long way since their inception. i consider them quality in the sense that they will last. but the issue is that people who are trying to produce a fine finish cannot sand them out to remove the imperfections. latex is soft and being soft, it does not sand well.

Yes cate. Some of the newer neighborhood stores have limited knowledge. They are minimally trained on their own product and know nothing about what the competition carries and will never send a customer to the competition even if the competition really has what the customer needs. Janovic simply has a better selection and a bit more training. Years ago i used to use them but because of the predatory nature of bm and all paint stores, i now go to mazzone on smith st or carrol st in brooklyn or gleasons in woodside and yes, i use the neighborhood stores but mind you, i walk in knowing what i need and already know more than they do about their own product.
Btw, i did speak to my neighborhood paint store and they said bm stopped making oil. I checked the internet and there is nothing to this effect out there so they must be still making it and not shipping to nyc. I am calling bm now.

Yes, that’s true, but BM is a great product and Janovic is great too. The quality is excellent. I prefer Janovic over some neighborhood options.

So yes, bm still owns janovic. I am not fond of this arrangement and do not support it and it is the reason i do not go to janovic. Bm can be very predatory and my understanding is that when new stores open they tell the retailer you carry only our line or none of our product. Hence, any time you see a new paint store with a bm sign out front, they carry the same limited selection of product, run of the mill consumer paints. Good products but limited.

I think that /janovic relatioship ended a few years back.
I only just learned about the paint issue a week ago so i have yet to confirm what i am being told – but to hear it from two sources? I doubt janovi lic will be able to help me any more than anyone else and if this is the law, its the law. This is the way this is going all over. I expect that in our lifetimes we will not be able to use oil bases paint for anything, anywhere.

if you are dealing with old, raw wood on those steps, try to go with an oil base primer that has linseed oil in it. that fresh start primer 094 i believe has linseed oil in it. sadly ben moore has discontinued their long oil primer (100?) which was the real primer for dried wood.
we now have another issue. i have now heard that we cannot get oil base paints in gallons anymore in NYC and consequently ben moore will not even ship quarts to the city. I am not sure of the exact details of this and we went through something like this in the early 2000’s (i think it was over paint for wood and on interiors) yet we managed to find ways around it (by using paints that are made for metals). i have heard this from two people – the manager at mazzone hardware and a contractor over here by where i live. he told me is has been running to nassau county for oil base paint.

If you are putting something on a wall and wish to tint primer so maybe you can put one coat of paint over that, so be it.
If you are trying to do this outside, you would be better off using whatever exterior untinted primer and putting the proper amount of paint on top, at least two thinner coats if not three. That might be a better way, leave the primer white. That way you have sufficient top coat protection and if you see white wearing through in time, you know it needs another coat.
