Question about Lighting

Good afternoon, we are now planning our light fixtures and I have some questions. The robots on most websites where you buy these things do not seem to know what I am talking about so hope someone here can help.
We have a house built around 1905 in which we found gas pipes n the ceiling. I believe the house had electricity and gas when it was built and I am looking for period appropriate light fixtures.

The ceilings are not that high: about 8-1/2 feet, 9 in others. I would have 30 inches at most from ceiling to bottom of the fixture.

I am looking at some typical Victorian gas/electric chandeliers which have etched glass shades attached to curving brass arms. Please tell me how many arms, or “shades” the lamp should have for a space about 14 feet s square. in order to give us adequate lighting. Each of the glass shades on the fixture can accommodate a 60 watt bulb. If there were four shades it would emit 240 watts of light.

Is there some kind of formula or ratio to use when calculating how many watts of light you will need for a given space?

There are shades that point up for gas and some that point down for electric. For the gas shades, how far down from the ceiling would they have to hang ? Each of the gas lamps in the fixture would have held a live gas flame. I am not worried about my ceiling but I do not want the fixture to look too short.

Jh, i can turn something on my lathe and thread one end with an sae die and the other with a metric die, its just one of those things. The lamp is brass so maybe i can drill it out and tap and insert a helicoil.

Old European fixtures are even more difficult Steve. We have a French ‘20s Deco wrought iron fiixture in our dining room. The art glass shades were held in place by rusted bayonet candelabra sockets. That one really needed professional work.

Jh, it was a full size bulb with a bayonet mount. No thread. The problem i have now is the metric thread on the threaded hollow metal rod that held the socket. I need to convert that to the american.

This might be a little over anxious but putthing something a little smaller in might not contact correctly which can cause arcing and heat. Poor connections get hot. I have never tried it but it rsises the question-

E26 vs E27, what’s the difference? E26 stands for 26 mm and the E27 for 27 mm in diameter. These two standards are interchangeable, meaning a US E26 will fit in a European E27 base, and E27 will fit in a E26 base. The only difference is the voltage (for light bulbs).

OP, about a decade ago when I was looking, there were all sorts of salvage lighting specialists online. We bought the most perfect gas lantern for our front hallway from a Seattle salvage shop, then later discovered another house in our row had an almost identical one original to their house. good call on that on that bob. be careful with ebay and anything from Europe. we have a beautiful table lamp here we got as a wedding gift and coming from Europe, it had a different bulb socket and to change the socket is a hassle because the treads on the socket are different than ours. i need something to serve as a transition. i have to make one.

I’ve had good luck finding light fixtures on eBay. Ones that need polishing and rewiring tend to be fairly inexpensive and rewiring old American fixtures isn’t especially difficult. Gas burners are mounted on threads that will take electric light sockets, which I’m sure wasn’t a coincidence. European fixtures are another matter.

You’re correct about the age of Steve’s fixture, but it could also take hallophane shades that would produce more light. All the fixtures in my 1899 house are old, but most are from the teens or twenties. I only have one gas/electric wall sconce that was left in the house and likely dates from when my block was electrified c. 1905

Cate, and lmiller, that is very helpful.

The other thing is that the standard of how much light you need was lower and that people who had the old chandeliers thought they were too bright back in their day. I will try to find one with at least 6 arms. if not 8.

There used to be some good dealers in those early light fixtures in Park Slope and on Coney Island Avenue, but both are gone now.

Hi Steve, thank you so much for your offer, but it isn’t right for us. I hope you find a good home for it, though.

What you have is an all-electric fixture (on electric fixtures, the shades point downward, gas shades point upward or are made like a small candle pointing straight upward). Your fixture was made sometime around 1910-30, if we can believe the old Sears catalogs, and might be found in a 1900’s house if someone added it later. The shades might not be original; it doesn’t look right to my eye, anyway; it could have had orange or clear iridescent glass flower-like pressed glass shades similar to Carnival glass.

OP, the size and height of a hanging fixture depends on the size of the room. (And also whether it is over a dining room table or not.) I don’t recall the calculations and the ratio. You can google it online. I recall that for a medium/small 1890s hanging gas fixture with four arms (maybe a 30-inch hang?) it fit best in the smaller middle parlor room. The gas fixtures can vary in size regardless of the number of arms. Ones for a house will be a different scale than industrial or commercial ones.

Incandescent filament bulbs are around half the light for the same wattage.
LED simulated filament bulbs vary tremendously, you can find bright ones but many are not, even ones sold as “60 watt equivalent” may only output 450 lumens. If you’re going with them, check the specifications—a regular 60 watt bulb is about 800 lumens, so you want something in that range.
The LED bulb universe isn’t very well standardized 🙂

But O think the faux Edison LED simulated filament bulbs give about as much light as regular LWD bulbs. IMO they look better in many fixtures.

To the original question–there are online calculators that will estimate the lighting needed for a room, if you want a mathematical answer. Here’s an example of one: https://www.waveformlighting.com/lumen-calculator
If you are using planning to use an old fashioned filament bulb, keep in mind that it will put out a lot less light for the same wattage vs a standard bulb.

FYI:

i have two brass light fixtures that i am giving away (on Old House Brain Trust on FB). Bob Marvin has claimed one. there is a second fixture that someone had an interest in but has i think stated they know longer want. you might want to look at photos on OHBT and see if you like the remaining fixture. As soon as I can, i wish to get rid of these as they are in my way. they are hanging fixtures. you can claim it on ohbt or here or by contacting me via brownstonehomeinspection.com (email or text).
