Question about Kitchen Faucets
Do you know how to figure out the correct “reach” of a kitchen faucet? This is for a undermount sink. We would want the water coming from the spout to go straight down into the drain, correct:?
Do you have any comments about the style of the spout, handles, etc.? Gooseneck, swan neck, straight, levers, knobs, etc. Which function the best?

Some of the newer types of faucets seem like they might break or be a b**ch to repair and I was wondering if anyone has one in their home and how they like it. There are now cartridges, ball bearings and other kinds of valves inside the faucet to regulate water temperature and volume control. There are too many choices now, almost. For releasing the water, some faucets have a built-in spray: a rubber hose pulls out of the faucet with a nozzle at its end. Would not the rubber hose break down over time? There are levers, knobs, single levers, bridge faucets, pre-wash faucets available now..

Over the years i’ve installed a lot of different faucets, first in commercial buildings (and some medical faucets which is where i get the paddle lever idea i mention above) and as i did kitchens over a decade ago. i am not sure i know the difference between a goose and swan neck, so this morning i took a look at my own faucet. this is what i can suggest. Go with something that rises up and turns 180 degrees but be careful. you do not want something that turns very tight so as to be close to the back of the sink (if you are rinsing something very big like a head of lettuce, you will be hitting the back wall). i think my faucet outlet is a little forward of the sink drain. I had not thought about any of this before but i can say this arrangement seems to work well. and yes, levers.
also, i am currently working in a house that has a very high faucet and a very deep sink. i have to use that sink from time to time and when i do, if i turn the water on any more than low, the water lands in the basin and splashes up and out of the basin. i am not sure if there is something else wrong here (a missing aerator?) but it makes mess outside of the sink. i will be at that house next week and might look at the faucet outlet to see if it is missing the aerator or if it even has screw threads for one (so an aerator is a consideration if they make faucets without them- i do not know).
i also work in a lot of houses that have the removable spray nozzle in the faucet. these are nice features but i also guess it is also one more thing to break.

paddle levers are really nice. levers are nicer than any sort of knobs (especially as we age). you can hit levers with the back of your hand to turn them off when your are busy creating your next mario batali. knobs are passe.
