Pulling up /replacing concrete yard
Does anyone have an estimate of what the cost would be for converting a concrete backyard—roughly 20 x 35—to plain dirt? I can do the landscaping/seeding once the concrete is gone, but have no idea how to budget for what I assume is a lot of jackhammering. There are also two 4′ cinderblock walls (leaning a bit) that would have to go. Anyone out here have experience in a similar project?

Something to keep in mind is what is your new surface and how will it direct water away from the building? Cement isn’t great for the environment, but a bunch of water seeping in next to your building foundation might not be ideal either.
This is an opportunity to consider a french drain or otherwise improving drainage for the building.

If you’re removing a lot of concrete there’s a lot to be said for using it to build up levels in your otherwise flat yard. Of course you still have to bring in soil to cover it, but there’s nothing to lug out.

You have no idea what you’ve got until you start trying to lift or break it up. I’d guess that if somebody decided to have concrete poured in their backyard 30+ years ago they might have done it themselves, might have poured directly on top of the earth, and might not have used rebar – meaning that it might be easy to pry up and break with a large pry bar and a sledge.

You are all crazy.
If the concrete was laid properly in the first place, you have drainage and steal mesh if not complete reinforcement as well as shingle under neath that; at least a 10 yard dumpster load full. Most dumpster companies charge twice as much for stone & concrete because most landfills will not take it. It is hard back breaking work that if you think you can get away with $100 a day laborers you should be ashamed of yours selves.
Then you will need a few ton of top soil hauled in to fill up the huge cavity that you have just created, so that a garden of any consequence can grow in….. all in at least $5-7,000
If you are looking for a cheap garden upgrade, just buy a lot of planters and tubs.

The dump charges $100 a ton, so just on the disposal you would be looking at a couple hundred bucks. Plus you’d have to rent a truck. Does it have to be carried through the house? It would take a couple guys all day or two days. So while $2,500 is a little high it doesn’t sound crazy. You could save money by hiring laborers yourself.

Dear god, I would not do that myself! I can’t comment on a quote but we had that done recently on a similarly sized space during our larger reno project. The concrete was actually reinforced with rebar, which we couldn’t have known in advance. Something to keep in mind if you want to do the DIY route…

I did something similar recently, but decided to do it myself. It cost me $20 for sledgehammer and $300 for carting. I had about 70 construction bags weighing 40 lbs each of concrete.

Hi, I also think it can vary wildly based on many factors, but maybe my experience will help. I’ve been getting quotes for a similar job in terms of size of the removal, minus the walls. On the low end, I’ve been getting quotes for 2.5k, going all the way up to twice that. My feeling is that many contractors don’t want to bother with the work, so they quote pretty high to scare us off.
