Professional to identify what is original in 1845 house

As I think about making upgrades and replacements, I’d like to know what is original or not to the house. I’ve gotten lots of opinions from people coming through and have my own thoughts, but i’d like to stop speculating and just have a professional opinion. For example, if my interior doors are original, I’m more likely to restore and keep them, but if they are not, I’ll replace them in an instant – so I want to know what decisions to make. Does anyone have an idea who I go to for such a service?

Re the question about full length Greek Revival parlor windows, six over nine seems most common, but I have seen nine over nine and four over six as well. I am basing this on articles on Brownstoner of Greek Revival houses in historic districts as well as photographs in Bricks and Brownstone. A close look at windows in Greek Revivals around State Street in Boerum Hill, Dumbo/Vinegar Hill, and Brooklyn Heights could also be illuminating, so to speak.

also, with doors and moldings pre brownstone period, look for pine. We
(the US) had not gotten into importing wood at that point yet.

keep in mind, early on things were made to be painted. paint was a display of wealth.

The “Century Homes” reddit group is pretty good if you want more from the peanut gallery (I know, that’s the opposite of your ask). Some ppl there are a little pro-restore everything, but of course in an old house the layers of changes are a natural part of its history, too. Anyway, very cool that you have an 1845 house!

umanish, had you put that question to me when i was in your house, i could have told you what was older. maybe not what was original but what came from what period. know that a lot of the pre civil war or pre brownstone period is not as nice as what came later anyway. it was more utilitarian. the nice stuff did not appear until we had a real emerging business and professional class. if you wish to tell if a door is older, look at the edge of the door. if the tenons are what is known as a “through tenon” where you can see the end of the tenon, it is an older style of making doors. i say older style because they continued making these doors for more utilitarian places in Brownstones – the entry under the stoop and the door down to the cellar – well up to say 1900. But prior to the civil war or the late 1870’s, they were everywhere.
