price for new 2 ton compressor.

i’ve just been quoted $5,500 for 13 seer 2 ton york compressor installed on our roof as a replacement for an older unit which isn’t repairable. This seems expensive to me but I’d appreciate anyone else’s opinions. This is only the compressor – not the air handler, line sets, dunnage, etc. – all of that is already in place.

Installation/Replacement work is never cookie-cutter in Brooklyn, our company for instance is fixed for Repairs but does all Installation/Replacement Proposals on an individual basis, so it may not be as outrageous as it seems. Really would need to know more.
Also multiple above pointed out, no cost ever comes to merely material and labor. Get multiple proposals and do a side by side comparison; the discrepancies i have seen between what different companies offer in their proposals is much more egregious than that cost.

Not comparable, but I just replaced the two compressors at my weekend house on Friday at a cost of $8k. But it probably still worked out to $4k in labor for what was probably an easier job in my backyard despite being two units. But there is more to this total bill than the unit cost + labor, although not huge in the scheme of things (refrigerant lines, refrigerant, reclaim old refrigerant, disposal). I also had no choices among equipment due to supply chain issues unless I was willing to be without a/c for a month.

Thanks Gennady – it’s actually the whole condensing unit – not just the compressor and it’s getting replaced because it’s got a big coolant leak. Plus it’s 11 years old. They’re charging 4,000 for 3 guys for one day which seems fairly egregious to me.

Keep in mind, that it depends on what actually happened. If compressors have a burn out, then whole system must be chemically cleaned and neutralized, which involves multiple visits and installation and replacement of the core filters. If not done, the new compressor will fail within a year again. Talk to the contractor, ask for justification and explanation. Do not go for cheap and fast or you can end up with 10 compressors laying on the roof in a few years.

This is a pretty small unit which will fit through our hatch – no crane required. I think the unit itself ought to cost around $1,000 give or take although they are quoting $1,500. They also won’t warranty their labor for more than 3 months. I think I need a different contractor.

It sounds too expensive, but we don’t know details. How much is the unit, like 1500? If they use a crane to get it up there, you could get to 5500, but there may be other ways.
