Prehung door with transom window that opens

Hello,

I am looking for a prehung door with a transom window that opens for our kitchen. I’m having trouble finding this. Do these have to be custom made in one frame or could you buy a prehung door and hopper window and install them together?

Something else, it would be very very easy for a shop to modify a prehung unit to add height to the jamb and make a hopper window. Very easy. I am not really marketing myself but i rebuild and modify doors under another company.

Right, i am not sure if i am right about this and yes, the issue may be in offices and apts.

Thanks Steve. I finally found a little info on the Pella website. It sounds like it’s an unpopular configuration so they suggest to install an awning or hopper window over the door. Our original back door was like this, but it’s been ruined by old repairs and replacements. We hope to get fresh air in the kitchen without the back door open. I can’t figure out why that would be a fire hazard. That could be for apartment buildings with transoms to a public hallway?

Back in the 90’s i worked in a building in manhattan and we had a couple of these in the older office building and staff were always opening them and my boss was always closing them. He told me they were a fire safety hazard and were at that point illegal. I do not know if that was just in commercial or in all nyc buildings but i have never seen say a modern apartement building with one. This may be why you are not finding them. Through my other company i do door restoration work and have people ask me about a lot of things and transoms that open are not one of them.
