Portable hot water heaters?

Our 100 yr old building had a gas leak and it’s going to be at least 5-10 weeks before we get hot water (permits/nat grid/DOB, etc). Has anyone used a portable electric hot water heater connected to the shower? Any advice, recommendations, or other ideas?

When you say “building” is this an apartment building or a house? There are temporary boiler solutions that are parked on the street. I suspect you have seen them — they look like ship containers. That would be for a decent sized building. Otherwise I agree with no-permitz you can just install an electric heater if this is a single family or small building. In addition to what Bob says, you likely would have to open some walls to install a single point on demand unit in order to get to the water lines.

why does it need to be “portable.” just install a regular electric water heater.

There are electric on-demand hot water heaters but AFAIK they must be installed by an electrician and a plumber and aren’t portable. However one might be a good solution to your problem, especially since, from what I’ve read on other posts, your gas shut-off might be FAR longer than 10 weeks.
