Portable dishwashers

Anyone have experience with portable dishwashers and/or letting a tenant obtain and use one? Our tenant is asking if they can get one. The apartment is small and has never had a dishwasher, so does not have the hard wiring or dedicated water lines for a regular one. I assume a portable just uses a regular electrical outlet and a faucet hose? Seems ok to me, but is there anything I should be concerned about? Many thanks.

If you can find a way to add a dishwasher tailpiece to the drain under you kitchen sink and tie the hose into that it would heavily reduce the risk of flooding, probably comparable to a normal dishwasher. You don’t need a professional plumber to alter the drain tubing under the sink, a reasonably handy person could do this. The trick would be running the hose out of the cabinets without keeping the door open. It may be easy or difficult to do this. Probably drilling a hole in a cabinet end piece, or in the toe kick. If it’s a laminate counter you could drill through that and put some trim around it. I’d also anchor the hose with a clamp so it doesn’t pull out if the dishwasher is pushed around on the countertop

I had one several years agi and it was great but a mishap could quickly flood a kitchen. Not sure if I would allow a tenant to have one.

I’ve had two mishaps with these portable appliances (it was a portable clothes washer) – both times because someone left the strainer/stopper in the sink, so the sink overflowed. Make sure they take it out before starting. a load.

I’m a renter and have one in my apartment and it’s easy. Uses regular electricity and connects with a hose into the sink. If it’s Energy Star, it actually uses less water than hand washing.
