Pocket shutters and window replacement?

We have original pocket shutters painted shut that we’ve always planned to uncover. I thought this project would make sense to do while replacing the windows to avoid making a mess twice.

Has anyone done this along with window replacement and is it realistic? I was reading old threads and saw a reference to pocket-shutters preventing brick-to-brick window replacement. And another poster was getting rid of their pocket shutters because they no longer fit after window replacement.

Does replacing windows often mean losing original pocket shutters?

I replaced my windows with wall to wall tilt&turn, and it was definitely a challenge to get it right because the window panes need to be able to swing freely to the inside, and I needed custom window frame extensions for each window. Anyway, with regular double hung it’s less tricky. You just need to shim from the wall, thus creating your own wall to wall window frame. Foam it nicely and you’re good. That should be possible without removing the shutters.
