Plumbing: Drain Cleanout

The joys of home ownership! Had a basement with sewer smells and the culprit was a clogged main sewer line. Second time it has happened since we bought the place – which had been renovated – in January. Apparently, construction crews often flush just about anything down the plumbing to dispose of which often leads to problems.

A quick 30 minute plumbing visit cost $450. I’m new to NYC home ownership, but this seems high? A quick rod down the pipe under the floor dover and they were on their way. Any experience from the forum?

We use econosewer for drain clean outs in Brooklyn because they’re cheaper than the cesspool plumbers that we find working in Manhattan

we called some guy who had a van that had some ridiculously low price on the side, like 59.99 or 79.99. he came in the house with a big electric snake and down to the basement he went. i would not take that machine out of the van for 79.99, so when he was done i handed him a big tip. that was about two years ago and all is still good. these roto rooter people and others who advertise these prices, they appear to be legit. we used roto rooter at a building i worked in once and it all went well. manhattan is a little more though.
