Plumber / water meter replacement / cost
I own a commercial property in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. It has two water meters, they were both vandalized and ripped off the building. I need a licensed plumber to fix them. The city said it’s not responsible. A plumber said the cost would be 14 grand because the city is now requiring copper pipes and somehow the water meter damage means the plumber must replace all the pipes, under the street (!?) with copper piping. It’s a Hexagram Star water meter. I’m not sure why it’s now my responsibility to replace all the pipes? The plumber also said this is the fourth water meter they’ve fixed in the area – which sounds like planned vandalism for someone’s pocket. Does anyone have any thoughts on this, or similar experience? Anyone have a plumber they recommend? Thanks for your thoughts. The meter was ripped off the wall, and needs reattaching, the quote of 14 grand, seems wrong.

Interesting, thank you so much. We have a call out to Main Man plumbing.

Water meter installation cost us like $1800-$2k this past summer. But we had a lead water main and you can’t install a water meter on a lead water main so we also replaced the water main (under the street). The total cost was $8k. The city reimbursed us $1200 for the water meter because we had never had one on the property. Ask about the water meter reimbursement program to see if you qualify. Definitely call the insurance company but they won’t pay to replace the water main if it is lead. We used Main Man plumbing co. They were super easy to work with, most reasonable cost, showed up on time, completed the work, great communication, and we’ve had no issues.

Doesn’t your insurance cover vandalism?

I just spent $10,000 replacing my lead water supply with copper tubing. The city sent me a letter stating they were updating all their meters. When the guy came to replace the meter, he saw the lead pipe and said he could not do it and then the city stepped in and told me I had to replace it. So it sounds like you don’t have a copper supply line, and that’s why they have to dig up the street at great expense to you. If you only had to replace the meter, that would be one thing, but it sounds like you have two issues one is the broken meter and the other is the pipe that supplies your water. The city is forcing all individuals with lead pipes to switch over to copper.
