Plumber rec for oil boiler replacement?

We’ve got a fairly old oil boiler in our brownstone which wasn’t maintained all that well in the past. It works well enough but is extremely loud and doesn’t seem terribly efficient. While we have mini-splits for additional heat in the main duplex, the other two units rely on the steam radiators for heat, and we wouldn’t want to get rid of the steam heat in any case. Can anyone recommend a good plumber to replace the boiler with a newer and hopefully quieter model?

GreenwoodGoblin, the minisplit in the duplex works well but we’ve always had the radiators as a backup (and as the sole heat for the top two floors). It’s a tough balancing act because the boiler still has to be on to properly heat the rest of the house, so often that’s all that’s needed. The ideal (but expensive) solution of course would be to add mini-splits to the entire house and then use the boiler much more minimalls. And Cate, yeah, I’m switching to a different oil company because the one we’d been using didn’t seem interested in trying to fix this (and had three heating seasons to figure it out already). Hopefully the technicians at the new place will have an idea about what’s going on!

We have always used our oil delivery company to service our oil-burning boiler. (We’ve had two over the years. ) Our current oil company calls these people the technicians. The plumbers they also have on staff are slightly different and deal with plumbing issues not involving the boiler. FWIW our oil boiler is not noisy. So I don’t think noise is anything inherent to an oil boiler. It might be easier to adjust or change out the oil boiler vs. switching to gas.

I have a 60+ year old Weill-McClain, so I’m really on borrowed time! OP, how well is minisplit heat working for you in your owner duplex? In our case, I am hoping to put half the house on electric heat and downsize our boiler…

Actually, Steve, I think you’re right (which isn’t too surprising)… Reading up a bit on the steam oil boilers, I think the part that’s making the “running airplane” sound is the burner portion. At a minimum we might be able to just replace the burner, if that’s possible, but the entire boiler is almost 25 years old and likely wasn’t maintained all that well for those first 20 or so years.

Thanks for the responses. I’m pretty sure it’s all part of the almost 25-year-old Weill-McClain oil boiler, but maybe it’s from the burner portion? The loud noise is when the boiler is actually producing the flame that boils the water into the steam– so, yeah, maybe that’s the burner?

If there’s anyone here who services (and ideally also replaces) oil boilers, that would be great, but I vaguely recall checking with someone who posts frequently and they said they only deal with gas boilers. The oil delivery company was supposed to send out a plumber to look into replacing it but they never showed, and honestly they’re not so great in general (so I’m also open to other oil delivery recs).

Is it the boiler or burner? When we moved into this house we had a burner that sounded like a plane in the basement. We eventually had to change that out and the newer one is quieter. You might want to have someone on this board who services this equipment take a look and tell you what is what.

Oh, no, trust me, the clanging/hissing radiators are an entirely different issue. The boiler itself vibrates and hums with an unpleasant intensity when it’s on heating the water. A plumber who was cleaning it once commented that he thought it was the wrong type of boiler for a 4-story brownstone and that it might have even been a commercial boiler. It’s possible any boiler would be loud in the garden-level rooms right above it, but this seems particularly annoying.

I haven’t heard of noisy boilers, only noisy pipes and radiators. Air bubbles can cause noise. A plumber with steam heat experience should be able to help. Might be fairly simple such as bleeding radiators. I believe there are some steam plumbing experts on the Forum who can explain in more detail.
