PEX in a 3 Family Brownstone in BK

Hi I just saw a 3 family brownstone being renovated and noticed all the radiators were connected by red plastic tubes. I’m assuming this is PEX. Is this to code? I looked under the kitchen sinks and those are cooper. Also, can’t rodents chew through PEX? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I’ve had PEX for baseboard heating in a country house in PA. Had it since 2000. I also have mice. Never had any issue with he two commingling. They will chew through a plastic feed line for a refrigerator water/ice supply.

Plumbers are the reason you don’t see pex in NYC. It’s easy for regular folk to use and almost impossible to screw up. They use it all over the place ( If i’m not mistaken rats and mice do exist outside of NYC).

That is interesting! Our Master Plumber joined in the conversation and said “I haven’t seen rodents chew through Pex but I have seen them chew through old lead water lines so it is definitely possible!”

Just sent a message around my team; no one has encountered issues with damage to Pex from what would appear to be mice. That being said it would seem logical that it is possible though.

Chris what do you recommend in terms of walls to floors. Pex in the floor will be sealed in concrete but in the walls, mice can get to it. I am slightly nervous after a brief mouse infestation some time ago.

Pex can 100% be used for heating; we do it often as well. It CANNOT be used for potable drinking water though; at least here in NYC

It looks like the the Building code allows Pex that meets certain ASTM standards. We’re using it too. Ugh I didn’t know about the mice – it appears that’s why it took so long for it to be adopted in NYC. Because of the rats…
