Pex allowed in Brooklyn

I had a plumber tell me recently that Pex is now legal in Brooklyn. I can’t find any evidence to support this so would very much appreciate any guidance.

Also anyone have an idea of a range — however wide — for running copper in an identified chase where holes have already been opened along the route (inside wall). 2 stories up plus 30 linear across. Maybe 60′ copper max.

I put pex in a new construction weekend house, in part because the contractor said it was highly resistant to bursting if the pipes freeze. There also are no pressure drop issues since every tap is a home run to the basement.

I have also heard that Pex can give off noxious fumes in a fire. In NYC, where we build up, firefighters have to fight fires from inside the building more frequently than elsewhere where there are mostly freestanding houses. That may be true or may be urban folklore, but I have heard that a few times, and that the limits on pex are at least partly due to the fire issues.

We don’t use it here because we all live on top of each other and the things we do to ourselves often affect others around us. PEX is a far more vulnerable water conduit than rigid copper. There’s also no reason to use PEX here rather than copper. Many areas in the US, and the world, have domestic water with a high enough mineral content that copper pipes and fittings becomes brittle and porous over little time of use. In our part of the world our copper pipes last indefinitely. PEX has its place, but if you were building or renovating a home in New York would having plastic piping filled with an endless supply of pressurized water really be your first choice to have running through your walls and ceilings?
It’s different when using it as a heating pipe since the pressure is much lower and the tubing tends to be in limited locations.

chemosphere–i believe certain varieties of PEX are widely used and legal for potable water, including california which is one of the most cautious locales around for health/safety issues.

Not approved for use in domestic water applications in NYC. Not even Brooklyn. If it were to become legal in just one borough first, which it wouldn’t, it would be Staten Island.

My understanding is Pex is allowed for heating purposes only, not for domestic water use.. Our heating system is Pex in the walls and copper outside.
