Parlor Floor Deck Iron Work

I’d like to start construction on a parlor floor deck, 20ft wide X 9ft deep, metal with ipe wood slatting and a staircase leading down to the backyard, however I’m looking for a guidance on a few things. The first is pricing, I’ve had a few iron workers come out and I’ve been quoted $12,500 (includes decorative iron work on balcony) and 14K so far. I’d like to know generally how much folks have paid for similar decks? I haven’t received a quote in re the ipe wood but what should I expect to pay in that regard? How much did it wind up costing you in total wood and iron worker to have the deck installed? Additionally, if anyone know where I can get a window door for use from the parlor floor to the deck? Also, as it relates to design I had my architect draw up a basic deck but I’m curious as to if there is any place I can go for further design inspiration (I’ve tried houzz and googling already)? A lot of questions, I know but any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

hi jeanmarine2, this info is so helpful! my husband and i are hoping to put in a similar deck this fall and were planning to use Lopopolo Iron Works. (plus do a window-door conversion) I’m a little overwhelmed with all of the steps it takes! Can I ask who you used to get your permits? Would you recommend them? I’d also love to know what your deck cost, we are also looking to do a small, balcony sized deck with stairs (similar to whats shown in your photo) Thanks!

Hi – We just got a new ipe wood deck with steel and the prices you are quoted are similar to prices we encountered when doing research. Our deck is 12 x 8 off the parlor floor. We went with Steve Rayboy (steve@urbanexteriors.biz) who used Lopopolo Iron Works. Steve came out, did the measurements and a drawing for us, and worked directly with the iron people. We didn’t have to do too much at all. The results are fantastic. I especially recommend working with Steve Rayboy who is extremely professional, prompt, and honest. His work is beautiful too. I’m told our door was ordered custom with a transom from Dyke’s Lumber in Gowanus – ThermaTru fiberglass – but I have yet to confirm that it was actually ordered. My contractor ordered it and the rest of the job is mostly done except the door conversion so we have a built deck, temp kitchen – and no way to get to the deck that was done a month ago, other than through a window or our cellar (or, for now, our ground floor but we’re about to rent that to a tenant). So our job isn’t going that well, but we were happy with Lopopolo’s part in it. He’s long done.

do you mean iron or steel – or the same thing? We just had a steel-only deck built, we used Lopopolo Iron Works and are really happy with the results. We went with all metal slats. We considered ipe infill but we’re a multi-family house and ipe isn’t permitted on our deck, it has to be fully non-combustible and this is a permitted job. We can always put down temp wood decking later. But I’ve heard that Lopopolo has sometimes done steel on jobs where Steve Rayboy does the wood, so you might ask them if you haven’t already. I think the decorative ironwork on the balcony will throw off the price, find out what it would cost more basic and you can compare apple-apple a bit better. My deck cost less but it’s pretty simple and smaller. I also used an architect and the drawings not only didn’t scare anyone off or raise the price, it helped people take me more seriously in the first place. Drawings are really important, decks are structural and you don’t want to mess around, have an architect or engineer involved even just to spot-check things. Are you also looking to do a window/door conversion? We’re doing that too, it’s our last big piece of our job and is expected sometime this month. Doors take 2-3 weeks to arrive after ordering. you could probably save yourself a few thousand dollars by sketching out the architects drawings and making it look like you did it yourself. these iron guys will think you have deep pockets if you show them drawings. either that, or say you are an architect and you did the drawings yourself. call artistic iron works, i’ve seen good work by them.
