Panning the Bay: Return Air Ducts
I am looking for someone who will do a good job panning a bay in my cellar., a return air plenum to a duct to my furnace. I’m told this is to code. The prices I’m getting just to tack up metal are outrageous. Can a handyman do this? Can it be just metal tacked to the bottom or should it be up the sides, too?

They can be used with certain conditions.
Op, you might be able to find some person to do this because it is simple and i suppose in my own house i would do it. But a lot of people (myself included) might prefer that doing something like this be left to heating and duct work specialists simply because of the unknowns; the code & the risks. In a way, that is why we pay specialists – for their knowledge not just their labor.

I had never heard the term “panning a bay”, so I Googled it:

i would be very careful proceeding with something like this and would be surprised if NYC code still allowed it. i’d like to see what the heating guys say about it.
