Painting Skylight Louvers and Removing Insulation
The skylight louvers over my property’s interior airshaft is stuffed with crumbling orange foam insulation.
My roofer observed that the insulation was soaking in water every time it rains hard, and the water is working its way to the interior ceilings on the top floor. He did NOT however recommend removing the insulation because in his words “…it stops the wind from being drawn into the airshaft.”
Has anyone out there removed this old insulation between the louvers?
Can it be done, should it be done?
Also-
Can the metal skylight be primed and painted with a standard spray paint both on the outside and inside?

I’m gonna have to think this one through a little bit.
I may just paint the outside with that silver paint he roofers use, and the inside with a high heat black…. And leave the insulation alone.

When we open our airshaft bathroom windows (and door) it cools the bathroom and lets out all the steam. It’s remarkably effective.

I would think it’s no big deal to remove the insulation, and close the bathroom windows on the airshaft if you don’t want drafts. However, I would think water getting through the louvers and into the house could be a huge problem. Possibly you could cover the louvers with something and put in air vents elsewhere on the roof? My neighbors on each side have the type of skylight with louvers you do. As far as I can tell, they are unaltered, and have been that way for decades, and probably they don’t have issues with them.

Pre air conditioning, these were probably left open to allow people in the summer to open windows lower in the house and draw cooler air in from below and vent out the top to cool the rooms. My 1928 skylight has a vented cap. Instead of letting the heat flow out in the winter, i cleaned the peeling paint out of the shaft and framed it with trim and set a piece of plexi glass in mine.

Just a quick follow up to make the question simpler:
For those who have louvers in their airshaft skylights….
Is there insulation between them?
Or are they open to the air on both sides— no insulation— overlapping each other, preventing air gusts to circulate into the airshaft?

Maybe “louver” isn’t the correct word.
What I’m talking about are the non movable, horizontal slats, which make up the side walls of my metal skylight.. maybe better described as, 4 or 5 vents, perhaps 12 inches tall in total, which run the length of each side of my skylight.

Our skylight over our airshaft doesn’t have louvers or insulation, just glass and the metal frame. We have other vents in the roof for ventilation.
