Paint thinner smell coming from the basement

The basement smells like someone spilled paint thinner. Any idea what could cause this? It started to smell around 3pm today. No signs of anything spilled in the basement. I think this happened once last year also.

I once smelled a really strong chemical smell and couldn’t figure it out. Turned out it was the combination of work my neighbor’s contractor had done recently-ish on their floors (but which wasn’t smelling on its own) and the combustion of my gas dryer.

Gas and petroleum solvents have totally different smells.

If you think it’s gas, get a plumber in there who can test for gas leaks and make any repair. You do not want the gas company in.

I experience a similar odor when a fuel oil truck is filling either our or a neighbor’s tank. Smell strongest in basement. .

Many years ago, I had a noxious smell in my basement, got progressively worse. Not knowing what else to do, called Brooklyn Union Gas. Guy came, smelled sewers outside my house, checked everything. Said it smelled like gasoline. Banged on neighbors door, (who I had already asked if he smelled it—no) BUG guy asked to come in, found leaking container of fuel for snowblower –GASOLINE COVERING the guy’s basement floor. ( we are attached houses) Check your neighbors.

I’ve heard reports of noxious vinyl plastic smells arising when the sun shines on vinyl window frames, but presumably that wouldn’t be a possibility in a below-ground cellar.

I have this issue in one room on the top floor of our house. It only happened in the summer though. Have not solved the mystery myself, so I’m curious about this thread. Does the smell seem like a vinyl plastic smell, or just chemical like turpentine? I’m not exactly familiar with what paint thinner smells like, so I’m trying to get an idea if its the same thing I”m smelling.

Do you have any solvents in the basement? Paint? Paint remover? Something else? What kind of heating system do you have and what kind of fuel does it use?
