Paint stripping of wood in Brownstone- cost, time involved, recommendation
Hi,
I’m Looking for someone to strip the paint on the wood in a brownstone. Stairs, window moldings, etc. Can anyone give an example of the approximate cost? Time to complete jobs like this? Any recommendations? Thanks.

i think we paid around 3K several years ago for a large bedroom that included a double mantel (with mirror topper) pocket doors, 2 doors and a large bay window. It took 3 days I think?

The mirror was actually 1200 – 6ft high and about 3′ wide but the details made it more expensive
Stripping shutters cost over 2k for vat dipped. Then separate charge for refinishing
A more complex mantle cost 700 to be stripped. Stripping a mantle (fireplace) should be no more than about 2 days of labor; about 12-16 hrs

Cost depends on which type of company you hire and how many people are on the job. You can call some wood strippers to come and give an estimate. We have been using a small firm to do small jobs over many years, and it has been quite reasonable and well worth the money imho. (It’s very fume-y and messy however.) Be sure to get real experts who handle everything well and won’t make dumb mistakes with chemicals etc. that could harm you or your property. We paid approximately $900 labor and $200 for materials to two people to strip a very large and wood-heavy bedroom (many many doors, cabinet, moldings, etc.). Took three Sundays if I recall correctly. (This was some years ago so I would expect it would be more now.)
